Some photos that I took of Guelph intending to convert to B&W. Please let me know what you think of composition and B&W treatment.

My favourite of the lot is number 2, nice composition and interesting background. The other three do not hold my interest for some reason, maybe the subjects are not interesting enough to be shot on their own. The last one almost works, but would be better if you used a wider lens to create a more dramatic rise up the stairs.

#2 by far. I like the way it is off center, the DOF is limited.
Bravo!!!!

Thanks for your comments Shniks and ryuwulf. I agree #2 is by far my favourite and I knew it would be when I took the pictures; however, I thought that the other ones might be contenders as well. I guess I was wrong.
The one that I was hoping to make work was the one of the Albion, any suggestions for that one?
Thanks,
Vince

I've gotta go with the crowd and nominate #2 as my favourite. The highlights on Mary look great and I think the muted background suits the picture well.
For the Albion hotel... hmm... what do you think of upping the contrast and cropping off the left half of the photo? That might highlight the crazy inconsistent details that give the building personality, like the broken and missing shutters and the air conditioner in the one window.

#2 is the winner for me. Not that I can explain why. :)

Not that I don't like #2, however #3 is the winner for me. I really like how the stairs lead you into the photo and up to the doors, which are open thus inviting you inside to wonder what's in there.
Nice photos!

Good call Neil, I will give it a try. When I cropped it I was trying to show the symmetry and accentuate the 'Albion Hotel' sign over the front door. You know just how difficult it is to get a picture of that building without filling the frame with streetlights, hydro wires, etc.
Elbee: Do you mean #4?
Thanks everyone,
Vince

I thought so. What I really like about that photo is the dark doorway. I was hoping it would convey a message of mystery and curiosity as to what lies beyond the door. Perhaps it is too subtle.

I don't know the correct terminology for this but perhaps the photo would hold more mystery if it were darker. Just a thought!
