Wade just asked what we were talking about, and he says 'oh yeah, I remember that movie... at the end where he has to kill his own dog...."

I said Oh NO.... THAT's Old Yeller. A totally different kind of RIP YOUR HEART OUT story.

Wow there was a lot of them, huh?

Josh read a book a little while ago, and he loved it so much, I read it. It's called "The day no dogs would die"
GREAT book about a kid that has to write a story/play for school and he vows that it wont be like Red Fern or Old Yeller.

It's hilarious.

EDIT: it's actually "no more dead dogs" (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbninquiry.asp?ean=9780786816019&z=y) LOL!

I must have been thinking of 'the day no pigs will die' in the back of my brain.

that's COOL!! And good for them. I always wondered why all the literature we were forced to read in school was sad or dark. Did any of you ever wonder that?

Sigh. Why is it so often empty and needing a clean up when I get in here.

What's been going on? Why are there all these eyepatches drawn on the pictures!

Ah - at least it wipes off ;)

Cutlasses and Jolly Rogers around - anybody would think it had been a Pirate party!

Oh, what's this, there's some quarters on the bar.

Superb pirate Avi's everyone. Puddles and Permies have to get the vote, I'm afraid ;)

Sorry about not getting a post card to you all yesterday, Pony Express is a bit slow out here, you know.

Actually we can't get a decent signal in our room and have to come to the lobby to connect, by the time we figured this out last night, I was already comfy cozy in my jammies. Up at 4:15 AM this morning as we wanted to get the best morning light we could for some pictures today. Plan to do the same tomorrow.

This is a beautiful area, getting lots of wildlife shots, except the bull elk and wolves are being elusive from us so far. So and captured a cow elk yesterday tracking collar and all. Days start out in the 30's and climb to near 60 F. We layer and peel as the day wares on. Yesterday and last night several areas received a dusting of snow that melted off by the time we left this evening. Managed to get a nice landscape with a dusted mountain last evening.

Won't be able to catch up much tonight. I'm assuming today is Pirate Day judging by the sudden Arggghhhhhhhh Avatar's I've seen.

So yesterday's post card:

And today's:

Yay Becky - thanks forthe updates :D

What the heck did all you pirates do to one eye?

I think they did a Mythbusters on this - when they boarded a ship and went below deck it would be dark and normally it would take a while for their eyesight to adjust, leaving them vulnerable to attack from those already below. By keeping one eye covered, it was used to the dark. They could then just move the eye patch to the other eye and have enough sight to attack/defend themselves. IIRC when they tested it on Mythbusters, the effect was quite obvious.

Speaking of analyzing literary works, raise your hand if you were subjected to "Of Mice and Men" at a young impressionable age.

*raises hand*

*raises hand*

And "The Pearl"

Almost enough to make me give up on the human race...

And then I had to study Gerald Manly Hopkins. AAAAArrrggggghhhh

Ooh, I quite enjoyed Flowers for Algernon. One of my favorites. Sad ending, though.

Lord of the Flies was a bit creepy.... about the most I remember from that one honestly was the boar's head on a stake... (Maybe that's where I get creepy from..)

Stay away from Where the Red Fern Grows:cry::cry::rolleyes:

Unusually for me, I have had a bit of a result with my "Mid Life Crisis"

I thought I was going to have at least a two month wait to see my new motorcycle but no, there is an anniversary edition in the showroom that is now mine, I pick it up a week on Saturday (they need that long to add the stage one, new exhaust (so it actually sounds like a Harley) and a few other bits and bobs.

It is in the Anniversary limited edition colours (I am not at all sure why 105 years should be seen a significant anniversary, but I ain't arguing :-) ) which are honestly a lot better in the flesh than the are in the H-D website pictures.

I will ensure to get some photographs after I pick it up and before it gets dirty.

I LOVE Edgar Allen Poe. I have his complete works and read through the book on a regular basis.

Now that I'm awake, it was easy to find my old Poe-esque poem.

Forevermore

Her heart stopped beating, stopped pumping blood.
The blood flowed o'er me like a flood.
I did not mean it, not this way.
Senseless death. There'll be hell to pay.

I loved that girl. I truly did!
Until that secret from me she hid.
She loved another, she broke my heart.
She seemed to enjoy tearing my life apart.

So I killed her. I have no remorse.
After what she did, it was my only recourse.
I only wish it didn't have to be.
At least now, she'll spend eternity with me.

Forever she'll lay on the right side of my bed,
In her sheer lace nightie, of bright red.
She's not as pretty as she was once before,
But now I know she'll be mine forevermore.

Hints on pronunciation for foreigners
I take it you already know
of tough and bough and cough and dough.
Others may stumble, but not you,
On hiccough, thorough, laugh and through.
Well done! And now you wish, perhaps,
To learn of less familiar traps.

Beware of heard, a dreadful word
That looks like beard and sounds like bird.
And dead-it's said like bed, not bead.
For goodness sake, don't call it deed!
Watch out for meat and great and threat.
They rhyme with suite and straight and debt.

A moth is not a moth in mother,
Nor both in bother, broth in brother,
And here is not a match for there,
Nor dear and fear for pear and bear.
And then there's dose and rose and lose
Just look them up--and goose and choose.
And cork and work and card and ward.
And font and front and word and sword.
And do and go, then thwart and cart.
Come, come I've hardly made a start.

A dreadful language? Man alive,
I'd mastered it when I was five!

Spelling Reform

A Plan for the Improvement of English Spelling

For example, in Year 1 that useless letter c would be dropped to be replased either by k or s, and likewise x would no longer be part of the alphabet. The only kase in which c would be retained would be the ch formation, which will be dealt with later.

Year 2 might reform w spelling, so that which and one would take the same konsonant, wile Year 3 might well abolish y replasing it with i and Iear 4 might fiks the g/j anomali wonse and for all.

Jenerally, then, the improvement would kontinue iear bai iear with Iear 5 doing awai with useless double konsonants, and Iears 6-12 or so modifaiing vowlz and the rimeining voist and unvoist konsonants.

Bai Iear 15 or sou, it wud fainali bi posibl tu meik ius ov thi ridandant letez c, y and x -- bai now jast a memori in the maindz ov ould doderez -- tu riplais ch, sh, and th rispektivli.

How did that happen?

Sorry, got interrupted for a while.

I figured out how it happened. between me opening the page and posting my 'quick reply' Cat changed her Avatar. The Garfield avi loaded with the page and Cat's face loaded as I posted the quick reply. It did confuse me for a moment, though.

Ok - so I am trying to learn to better be able to look at an image and determine the direction of the light... On some images it's uber easy, on others it's not. From what direction do you think the light in this image is coming?

http://lifeprintsphotography.com/POTN/macro/Flowers/WaterLily_7388.jpg

My guess is overhead, 45 degrees, left hand side...

I would say (based on a hypothetical compass where N is straight in front of you) that it's about WSW which would be slightly behind you on your left hand side. I would also say that the sun is fairly high in the sky - about 2 hrs before or after midday.

But what do I know ;)

You can edit one photo and have the edits apply to all and when you export you can export all with their settings as a group in terms of file size and conversion. It is really nice for me when I do event work to export everything at the same size and converted from RAW.

I'm getting a 'makeover' hair style next Thursday, so I'm just leaving them in till then.

Marian has to have hers removed before she goes back to school.
She got Friday OK'd by the principal, because it's spirit week, but normally it wouldn't be allowed.
