If there really is a problem...Canon will fix it...they can't afford not to...

I now too believe there is a problem Canon need to fix. In africa I saw the problem described by cds, blonde and others where focus suddenly shift from a small bird on a busy background to the background even though the center focus point is dead on the bird.

OOooooo000oooo new toy goodness

My dad just told me that a guy at work who does underwater photography is giving us his old noink F3 and a handful of nikkor primes. I think he said the nikkor 15mm f3.5 is one of them.

Now dads wondering about going to noink or at least having a noink DSLR in the house as well. Next thing you know, he will be coming home with a leica or a panasonic dslr

Another one bites the dust.. that is a hell of a lot of gear to buy, shoot less than 1.3K frames, and give up. Some people just have too much money.

Is it just me, or do most of those prices look like brand new prices?

I bet the people in the lens forum told him to buy most of that stuff. Those guys should hang their heads in shame....

Lightstream

I still find it hilarious how much gear and SO FEW FRAMES. Heck, on just one test shoot I can already use something like 200-300 frames just to 'shake down' equipment and characterize its performance before putting it into production.

And lenscoats? CP-E3? These are extremely specialist items you buy only if you are damned sure you need. I shot over 25 events in the last 6 months and never needed a CP-E3.

(yes, I am in an exceptionally vindictive mood, someone is trying to kill my career and they are quite close to succeeding)

Pete

Actually. I bet it's someone who had a stack of cash, wanted to get into photography and tried to buy the best he possibly could to suits all conditions/scenarios.

And then found out that you actually have to have some level of photographic skill to get the best out of it.

My old 30D and 17-85 taught me a great deal. Yes, I've got more expensive kit now, but at least I know (kinda) how to use it.

Lightstream
20th of September 2007 (Thu), 04:49
That is actually a pretty darn awesome rig and I would be happy with that (perhaps except for my personal disagreement with the 17-55).

Fully agreed about the skill. I know a few naysayers who don't like me, and who always try to pin my results on the gear, but what REALLY intimidates them is that I can actually shoot. And I refine my skills so that they can be expanded to both higher end, and lower end equipment. Where it's not a technical equipment limitation (ie. like trying to get f/1.4 out of a mirror lens), I see if it can be done with less.

I have very compelling reasons to indicate that my last batch of shots could have been taken with a 350D and 10-22 in JPEG.

And how do I know? My fellow photogs did it. They are the scary ones, they shoot with very little gear and get phenomenal results out of it.

Throw me back my 17-85 and 350D and watch me kick some serious @ss :) Yes, that's the 'slow' lens. Yes, it's ONLY a f/5.6. It's "consumer grade". It's "kit lens optics with USM". Amongst other insults it's been called. Watch what it can do in the right hands.

My shots seem to get better as I spend money on better equipment.

Go figure... ;)

Ahh you don't need to have a use, just put it on your shelf. After all you just said the more you spend the better your photography gets, right? ;)

Watch and learn as Curtis N schools people in lighting.
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=376635

I love his quote "Good lighting comes from knowledge, not tupperware. If you want to light better, go to Strobist and start learning."

Well except that if you hang out in tupperware you may receive some pointers towards better lighting and most certainly a Strobist recommendation :p

Curtis and Londuck are two very respected strobists on POTN.

Ye olde index card (as repeatedly proven) works great. My Joe Demb Flipit is just a more robust version that saves me from having to cut paper to size every time.

Yoda, you might appreciate this. I venture into the lens forum once more tonight to follow up a post i make and i find this

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=3969699&postcount=4

Why do people have to be so opinionated? What happens if im the unlucky person that has had problems with all my canon lenses and they have all had to gone back?

Personally, i own (well once the second one gets here) 2 sigma lenses and looking at my 3rd and 4th (30mm 1.4 which ive borrowed at the moment and 70-200 2.8). While they may not be right up there with the L's, their bang for buck is unbeatable.

I was talking to my dad last night and we both came to the conclusion that we would rather spend a little less on lenses and get cheaper versions/third party stuff if it meant we would have a wider range of glass to cover more occasions. Given we dont shoot pro, have a collection that covers most shooting needs seemed like a smart idea to us.

Saw that. Same as the f/2.8 snobs who think f/4 glass is 'useless'.

I like to think not. I've got my lenses for quality, not simply because they're fast.

I guess you won't say that everyone MUST have only f2.8 or wider lenses.... It fits your needs better, but you don't say it's useless (AFAIK)

So I think you can still hang around a bit with us ;-)

Well everyone would have to stop their lenses down at least once in a while. So 2.8 or faster isnt that great....:p
