FENG!! LOOK A Free Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine

j/k...but I had to say something so that Three could get some coffee :)

hey look, when I was looking for that "free" machine, I found out that my new one got a 9.2 rating...tres cool

http://www.coffeegeek.com/reviews/consumer/delonghimagnifica/jonoz

and it even gave me a good tip for conquering the foam:
Making micro foam is the challenge if you like your cappuccinos "dry". However, I used a technique described here on coffee-geek that works. In a nutshell, you will need a cold metal pitcher & themometer. When making the foam let the tip surf the top of the milk creating a funnel until you reach 100 degrees. Then plunge the tip down into the milk until the temp is 150 degrees, all the while lowering the pitcher as the milk rises. Stop, then scoop the foam out with a big plastic spoon or spatula. Also make your espresso first.

I'll try.... just wondering what we might shoot on the weekend - would my car be required or should I just ride the ferry across?
We are renting a car in Seattle and will take it across on the ferry with us but only so we can have it when we leave for Seattle. We plan on hoofing around the island and maybe taking the ferry to another island and doing some sight seeing by boat.

Mo, send me your itinerary...if we can get up there at one point or another, we will.

Come up for the trip to the zoo on Wednesday! I'll be there. Not sure if there will be a munchkin in tow yet.

Well, not really. We stopped by the islands for one day on our drive home from Alaska five years ago.
But take the ferry over...the islands are small enough to walk, hike and shoot;)
Our hotel is only 2 blocks from the ferry landing.

The third grader will be in school, and the 21 month old has a doctor's appointment. The kindergartener does have the day off, but I'm not sure if he'd rather spend the day playing with me at the zoo, or playing with mom and his little brother around home. So far, he keeps leaning towards mom.

First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin.
Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less.
Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three.
Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three.
Five is right out.
Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it.

They were extremely close. Had to pull out the 5D with the 24-105 for some of the shots.

The closest we got to an animal today was an emu trying to peck out Puddle's eyes. He couldn't get to them, so he settled for my passenger window. It was a little freaky!

those emu's are crazy! A friend of ours took their family to WLS right after they bought a new van. An emu charged the car screaming and flailing...and JUMPED onto the hood of the van...scratching it...they thought it was having a seizure...and they had to wait until it was over...couldn't hurt the animal...anyway. Pretty soon it stopped and sat still on the hood...then it stood up...and there was an egg on the massively dented and scratched hood. The egg rolled off...the emu walked away...and they drove on (and had their van repaired about a month later)...

If that's how they lay eggs I wonder how come the species has survived for so long!

I would have stepped out, grabbed the egg and put it in the back. I'd then take photos of the incident, the damage, (for the insurance company) and later, of me making a seriously hardcore omelette.

It sorta reminds me of how one of my friends had a problem: his car was being vandalized and scratched repeatedly, and you wouldn't believe who was the perp: one of the neighborhood cats!!

Pleased to announce that the camera of choice among the "out-laws" is Canon. Wish I'd had the 30 D so I could try their pretty toys. I was happy to be more involved in things than I would have if I'd had the camera and there was always kit around if I wanted to catch a shot. Ended up as the wrangler for the wedding photog. Cool... got myself a nice, little 12-cup Krups coffee machine. No espresso, no steamer - just coffee.

It has a mesh filter and a timer - so I can wake up to the smell of coffee....

And it was a few hundred dollars cheaper than the other one I had in my possession

mmm the krups machines are pretty alright actually... once you learn to work with it... we had one here at work... had crappy ground coffee, no tamper... sheesh... but it could still draw a nice shot...

hey look, when I was looking for that "free" machine, I found out that my new one got a 9.2 rating...tres cool

http://www.coffeegeek.com/reviews/consumer/delonghimagnifica/jonoz

and it even gave me a good tip for conquering the foam:
Making micro foam is the challenge if you like your cappuccinos "dry". However, I used a technique described here on coffee-geek that works. In a nutshell, you will need a cold metal pitcher & themometer. When making the foam let the tip surf the top of the milk creating a funnel until you reach 100 degrees. Then plunge the tip down into the milk until the temp is 150 degrees, all the while lowering the pitcher as the milk rises. Stop, then scoop the foam out with a big plastic spoon or spatula. Also make your espresso first.

excellent... although I like to do the milk first... and swirl it while my coffee's extracting... Also heating cups with boiling water is good too...

My left arm was aching after six hours of yesterday's wedding. I tend to hold my camera by the lens in my left hand most of the time when I'm not shooting. Guess I need to get a handstrap or something to make myself use my right hand more.

I made a couple of quick comments in your Dover thread, too.

I know exactly what you mean....lol. That sucker can get heavy after 5-10 laps....lol. Where can I see your stuff from the weekend? Post something pretty for us!

and thank you so much for your awesome comments in the other thread....I replied there too....

I put up a few pictures a while back in this thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=3991548&postcount=2734) -- don't know how you could have missed it. This thread has been moving so slowly lately. . . ;);)

I had a stack of other tasks I had to finish today, too, but I hope to have some others available for comment tomorrow.

You weren't anywhere near the pit row accident today, were you?

I didnt get to stay for today. My passes were for the Busch events. That was just terrible. That will give all those clueless people a little understanding of why they penalize teams for losing a tire....Doesnt seem like a big deal when nothing happens but that was the perfect example for why they are so strict about tires and hoses and jacks etc......

I skimmed through the posts I missed quickly just to get an Idea of what the chatter was.....lol. I did see them. Im in la la land.....

Hm, talk about spending money. I should get another camera backpack. Mine is a bit too bulky. I want something I can put regular stuff in as well. Hm...any ideas?

Some research last night shows that there are 5 basic types of flamingos...each with different colorings....the most colorful being the Caribbean variety...and the brighter colors are attributed to their diet...in this case...mainly shrimp! Nice call Cap'n.;)

"We're in the Great Smoky Mountains," said Sharp. "It's very mountainous with a lot of creeks, waterfalls and trails that are not clearly marked. It's very easy to get lost."

Not if you stick to your trails and use a map and compass.... What do waterfalls and creeks have to do about getting lost? (unless you fall in one)

The good news is...the area where they are supposedly lost is not one of the more remote areas...they are near the base of Cold Mountain...at least that is where the early reports have placed them....that is a fairly distinct landmark.

Heya TD, how's your 100-400 with the sidekick? I hear a lot of carping that it is unbalanced. I'd trust your impressions of it with the 5D mounted, a lot more than the random stuff I read on the Net..

In other news, I am sizing up a bag for the 300/2.8 ISL in my future.. the Domke F-2 classic looks like a great bag. Heck, I should tell my local dealer, with the amount of $$ I am paying, you should throw the bag in for free :p

Yoda,

The 100-400 works great on the sidekick. Honestly, though, I've only had it mounted on the 30D while on the sidekick. I haven't tried the 5D on the sidekick.

My experience with the sidekick is that you can balance any long lens quite well on it.

Excellent, thank you!

Actually, 20D, 30D, 40D and 5D are all so similar that it's close enough. Few grams either way ain't gonna tip the scale too bad.

Lots of people whine and carp about poor balance but it seems that it has worked out for you. I'd love to try it.. :)

I don't get what the fuss is. You can adjust the lens back and forth on the sidekick to balance anything. Once balanced, you can move the camera/lens with a finger. Very nice!

Very tempted to get one for my 400.... the 400 is a light lens, but the sidekick makes panning with a tripod VERY easy!
