Wow. I've achieved 10,000 posts. Occasionally, one hears of members of this fine Forum complain of those that have "inflated" post counts. As if the ability to engage in conversation is something that should be limited or frowned upon. That the excited and passionate discussion of a shared hobby is to be rationed.

I enjoy photography. No, I'm not a professional. No, my family is not dependent on my ability to produce the "Money Shot". I enjoy taking what I see, the small part of the world and capturing it within my camera. I enjoy trying to increase my knowledge of manipulating light and color so that the shots that I take today are better than the shots I took yesterday and will only improve tomorrow.

I also enjoy spending that time conversing about photography with others that share the same joy, the same excitement of a well exposed picture, the same focus of growing in experience. If my 10,000 posts indicate anything, it should be that I've found a group of friends with whom I am very happy to talk with, to learn with, to be encouraged and to encourage.

I do not see my post count as something of which to be ashamed. Rather, I see this milestone as an indication that I have discovered a place where photography and friends can celebrate the joys of conversation and enrichment.

Congrats on the milestone Cap'n...I'm just glad you decided to become a part of our little circle...and share your talents with us!

warning! Rant Ahead

Ok, a couple of days ago, me and my dad did a trade on lenses. He bought the 10-20 and traded it for my 12-24. Now, he has never used a UWA in his life and he is having exposure problems with it (which i cant recreate). He also said that he tried it on my camera to see if it did the same thing and he says it did. Although, he deleted the photos he took showing the problem on my camera. And yes, there is a gap in the file numbering to support this.

I got him to show me some photos where it was blowing out the frame and he just did. There are some trees in the middle that are in shade and then a bunch of other stuff that is in direct sunlight around the rest of the frame. He has the camera on partial metering mode and by looking at it, the trees in the middle are perfectly exposed while the rest over the frame is over exposed. I tried to tell him that it was the metering mode he is using that is causing it but he said that the brick wall in the foreground wouldnt be blown. I said that it wouldnt even be in the metering circle and told him to look through my camera so he could see how much of the frame the circle covers. He refused to and is now telling my i knew of the so called problem with the lens before hand.

Trust me, if i knew of a problem with it, i would have been b****ing to you all on here about it a long time ago.

/end rant

Ive tried that. Ive also been through every single shot ive taken with it since i got it (i dont delete photos) and havnt found any trace of the problem he is having with it.

He also said that if it doesnt work on his camera then he doesnt want it. Had half a mind to tell him he should have tried it before making the deal with me.

Have you been with him while he was taking some "problematic" shots? Then you could take the same shot and explain with the proof were the problem comes from.

Sometimes, people don't want to hear the truth though :-(

I hope you'll find a solution ;-)

I need a new camera! Mine (XT) doesn't have enough fps. I took the following 2 shots in burst mode at 100mm (1/800s). Look where is the kingfisher on th first one and where he is on the second.. Those guys are so fast!

I just stayed with the camera aimed, finger on the shutter until I saw him. Then press shutter and after 3 shots, he's gone! The guys who manage to get in-flight shot of these are really good! 1/800 and he's not frozen!

But the other day right, he comes home with a brand new pentax k10d. I mean, yeah its a cool camera and all, but why? He has said many times that his wallet made the decision to stay with canon with the glass he has bought for it and he goes and buys another pentax body.

That money could have been nearly the 300 f4L IS he wants or a macro lens for me and something for him. And then he tells me that he was going into the camera shop to buy a 40D in the first place.

Just leaves me asking, why?

Buy your own gear out of pocket. Maintain your own gearlist. And don't talk about it.

Almost nobody who knows me in person actually knows how much gear I have.

i do buy all my own kit with my own cash. Its just that to not be ripped off you have to buy on line which you need a credit or debit card for. Also the fact that once you've purchased the item you have up to 6 weeks in which to pay for it the money is sat in your account earning you interest instead of in some large corporations bank account.

Its a more economically viable way to shop you just have to keep tabs on your income and out come.

There is more satisfaction in an entry level lens bought with your own work and $$ than a handout from someone else.. :)

If you play your cards right you can buy a lot of decent gear for not too much $$. I learned that you don't need fast glass and you don't need to go nuts with prime lenses. Cover the bases with zooms and use skill and flashguns to make up the rest. And above all, still remember it is the photog and not the gear.

My recent Great Ocean Road shots - those could have been taken with a 350D and 10-22. I researched the settings I used and discovered no, it's not the equipment getting in the way.

Good strategy. I use debit cards and only top them up when I need to make a purchase - this combats both Internet fraud and keeps a rein on my purchases. Nothing stops a fraudster trying to empty your account like "ERROR 08 DECLINED" on your debit card with $0.00 in the account :D

(of course when I accidentally forget to top it up and get hit with that error myself.. oh well ;) )

Don't listen to it. I have to deal with some haters who are annoyed with me because 1. I have good gear 2. AND I can take a great shot to back it up. It's never easy but sometimes you just have to smile and let them go.

I actually enjoyed my 350D and 17-85. That setup has a lot of good memories, which is why I keep it. I had a lot of fun in those days even taking crappy photos. I didn't covet the L. I bought L only because many of the lenses that are suitable for my applications are L's - and that was only triggered when I went to full frame.

If I had stayed EF-S, my gearlist would be 10-22, 17-85 IS, and 70-300 IS. I don't listen to the whiners in the LF who tell me 'it's too slow' because again I proved I can do the job with less. I shot airshows and jet aircraft with the 70-300 with its MICRO-USM drive and landed portfolio-grade material (one magnificent shot of an Airbus that printed up to 16x12" tack sharp).

In your shoes.. I don't mean to criticize but I think you need to re-plan your strategy for bang for the buck. I would have stayed with the 400D, the 20D is old tech. I shot my cockatoos at 3fps and my airshows at 3fps. Controlled fire is far more important than raw burst rate or buffers. In your situation, 10-22 for WA, 24-60 for standard zoom, add a 70-300 IS or 70-200 f/4L non-IS depending on what you need. Avoid collecting all the little curio cameras - if you want to shoot film stick to one proven system like the Canon A-1 and get it cheap off ebay (even I did - $24.95 AU SHIPPED for my 28/2.8 - you can't even buy a case of beer for that!!). Keep the 50/1.8 for sheer value for money. Ditch the rest of the primes. Hang on to your 430EX and don't let the complainers tell you it isn't enough power. I am an events/PJ-style shooter and my little 430EX can out-shoot all the twits running around with the biggest flashes they can carry because again I subscribe to the Strobist school of thought: master light, not equipment. In fact I have so much reserve power that while they're waiting for their flash to cycle I can hold mine down in DRIVE MODE and keep spraying.

That's really all you need. A 3-lens zoom kit for broad spectrum coverage, and one or two primes. Macro can be done with ext. tubes or teleconverters. One flashgun is good enough.

Ah, the "get no respect" problem. I dealt with that many times.. I still deal with it on occasion because I look younger than I am, but I still hate it as much as ever.

Don't have a solution to that other than to just do the best job you can and eventually the haters keep their mouth shut because they know you can walk the talk.

Honestly, thats the best advice anyone has ever given me regarding photography gear. Funny you mention that i should have kept the 400d, its something i regret in a way every day. Although the 20D does feel like the camera for my hands, nothing else ive picked up feels as good as it (not even the 40D). But i hear you with the controlled fire, i usually shoot in single shot mode anyway. Id rather time my shots right instead of spraying and praying.

Ive still got the 10-20 for wide so im covered there. the 724L was one i was thinking about. Its fine for what i would use it for and i can get one for a decent price too.

Although i will end up getting a sigma 105 macro. When im doing macro work, it relaxes me more than any other form of photography. May as well make the most of that feeling.

Do also want an off camera cord, just so i can try some of the strobist stuff. I guess even the ebay triggers would be alright

But like ive said before, im a hobbyist. I dont do this for a living, i do it to make pictures that are pleasing to me and no one else. If other people like them, then thats a bonus. If i can spend just the right amount of money on a kit that works for me, then i can use the extra i could have spent on living and going places to take photos.

Gee, ive done a lot of typing tonight.

And there is the reason they call you Yoda :D

Honestly, thats the best advice anyone has ever given me regarding photography gear. Funny you mention that i should have kept the 400d, its something i regret in a way every day. Although the 20D does feel like the camera for my hands, nothing else ive picked up feels as good as it (not even the 40D). But i hear you with the controlled fire, i usually shoot in single shot mode anyway. Id rather time my shots right instead of spraying and praying.

Thanks :) Yeah, most people think I'm nuts for recommending slow glass and zooms and not sticking to the 'holy grail' of photographic gear shopping. If I had to do it all over again I wouldn't change a thing. Throw me back on my old 350D 3-zoom setup and I'd still be able to do most of what I do today.

Oh yeah, my bad: yours is a 10-20. Stick with it. I work with two other very talented photogs who shoot on 350D/400D cameras with the Sigma 10-20. We were on location once when we had some downtime and decided to pixel peep the Sigma vs the Canon. At f/8 (which we all shoot at anyway) the two lenses are nearly identical. It's hard to call it. f/8 is optimal, above that is soft, below that the diffraction bug bites ya.

Ebay triggers are a good call. Get the Cactus V2 for the Canon 430EX (and confirm with the seller that it fires the 430, I think there was some concern about this a while back). Cheaper than the off camera shoe cord and better. You will need to use manual but your 430EX has manual power so it's all good. As you become more comfortable with manual you don't miss E-TTL so much. I only rely on E-TTL for very fast-moving situations and usually on-camera anyway since I have no time to stuff around with remote flashes.

Great realization too. I had a lot of fun in the 350D days precisely because I was shooting for myself. I still am, but now even my own expectations have been adjusted upwards (I expect too much now). Spend the rest of the $$ on travel. Getting there is half the battle for a landscape photog :)

Stay tuned: I may have a 50 Compact Macro for sale cheap in a month's time. I'm going back to my EF-S 60 macro because I like ultrasonics, so no sense doubling up on the macro.

Mooooorning everyone...

It's raining here so I'm definitely up for a quiet day of football.

Good news is that I'm not feeling worse after having been frozen to the bone yesterday.

Bad news...some how I HAVE to narrow down the last 7 shots (that I can't make up my mind on) to 4 for the "show me what you got" contest. TODAY...oi. Seriously there were some excellent shots this week too...

Okay everyone, here is my official Puddle In Trouble (P.I.T.) Gallery (http://hoyboy.smugmug.com/gallery/3562992). Check back often, I have a bunch more to add.

That's funny, I need to make one of those...maybe we should have a smugmug P.I.T group

I'm thinking of putting this one on a canvas, what do you think?

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l244/DDA_04/Macro/IMG_7140.jpg

I think it's a lovely shot and it will print well no matter what the medium but Wool is right, you'd lose the sharpness that really sets it apart if you put it on canvass.

I know, I know.... It's terrible. But it works so goooood....

Maybe heresy but it DOES work better than mine!

Morning Permie.

It's rainy and yucky outside, but I'm loving it! Not loving the football choices just yet.

It took about 30 seconds to create the PIT gallery. I just created a new gallery, made it private, then moved photos from my original private sharing gallery to this one. Voila! Puddle In Trouble!

Yeah, I'm not thrilled with the gaming choices either. We were supposed to have an Oakland vs. Miami game but they pre-empted it with the jets vs. sombody...like that's going to be any better? At least Oakland is my team so I have a reason to be involved...

It was at two locations: a Wildlife Refuge and someone's property.

The picket fence was a house on the Refuge that's now a historical site.

Oh NO you did not! You did not mention the plaid.Funny thing is, I almost made a crack about brides in Oregon wearing Pendleton plaid, but decided that it was just too stupid, even for me. That was yesterday. Today, I might've said it.

 okay it's not so much the plaid but the FLANNEL...I totally admit to a secret (though no longer secret) passion for a good FLANNEL!!

The bride wore white and a Leather Jacket. It was the Flannel Clad Photog who committed the Fashion Felony.

Admitting you have a problem is the first step toward recovery. Congratulations.

You can hold her down with only one hand?

Actually, she had been drinking to calm her nerves, and, well....

She's definitely fold-able, but not quite as much as as the Boring Boy variety:

There's foldable, then there's fully collapsable.

Its the all new Fold-n-Go Photographer ;)

fits in the glove box, too!! Wait, there's more!....

I would never even attempt that without a block and tackle nearby. At a bare minimum, it would take about three weeks to get feeling back in my legs.

Trust me, it hurts just to watch them do that maneuver.

Funny thing is, I almost made a crack about brides in Oregon wearing Pendleton plaid, but decided that it was just too stupid, even for me. That was yesterday. Today, I might've said it.

What's wrong with brides wearing Pendleton plaid? Very stylish.

G'moooooooooooooooorning everyone.

Feeling a little less bleh than last night, not much though :(

Ebay triggers are a good call. Get the Cactus V2 for the Canon 430EX (and confirm with the seller that it fires the 430, I think there was some concern about this a while back). Cheaper than the off camera shoe cord and better. You will need to use manual but your 430EX has manual power so it's all good. As you become more comfortable with manual you don't miss E-TTL so much. I only rely on E-TTL for very fast-moving situations and usually on-camera anyway since I have no time to stuff around with remote flashes.

Id read about getting the V2's for their compatibility with the 430ex. Im very tempted by them when ever i run across them on ebay.

Stay tuned: I may have a 50 Compact Macro for sale cheap in a month's time. I'm going back to my EF-S 60 macro because I like ultrasonics, so no sense doubling up on the macro.

Thanks for the offer, but id really like something a little longer. Using my dads 100mm macro the other day seemed about right. Its a decent length too and i dont know if i would like the idea of having two 50mm lenses

The 430 does not have a PC connector - so you would need to buy a hotshoe to PC adapter to use the V2...

Timbernewt, I'm not sure that new AVI is a good look for you.

The 10-22 wasn't designed for close-up portraiture.
