No... I was planning on hiking out to Paradise Park to take some fall photos... oh well... maybe I should buy some snowshoes :-D
Ha. I wouldn't do that hike in snowshoes if they paid me. Remember the hike in and outta zigzag canyon!?! There isn't all that much foliage out there for fall colors.. but do what you want :-D (mostly wildflowers and evergreens... but there is a little..)

The Hoya Pro1 UV filters were pretty cheap - I am just sad that my 77mm CPL got messed up at the balloon thing... those aren't cheap to replace!
Yea I know, I just need to get it. I am kinda waiting after this large purchase before I get the other things like a monopod and filters.

Wow - a snow warning already :-D Up to a foot of snow in the mountains this week... pretty impressive for the first week of October!

SWEET!!! BRING IT ON!

No! It's for me :p

BTW, it already snowed quite lo in the mountains 2 weeks ago. Quite unusual that early in the season. But I sure hope we'll have a great winter (after the last awful one...)

Edit: i took this earlier on for another forum to show what effect an ND8 has on a scene, thought someone in here might find it useful

Wow - a snow warning already :-D Up to a foot of snow in the mountains this week... pretty impressive for the first week of October!

I was playing around on noaa.gov yesterday, looking at the forecasts for some of my favorite places, and saw that Lake Tahoe might be getting snow later this week. Of course, that's not all that odd. I was up there in October a few years ago when there was two or three feet of the stuff on the ground.

In any case, it looks like summer is definitely on the way out! (So, why is it still 85F degrees here right now?)

The yellow color came from the lighting at the waterhole. At the three camps in Etosha they had waterholes with a viewing area.

well the 85 has a weird focus thing where you can only turn the focus ring when it's on the camera (Electronic manual focusing...that weird thing where you must have the camera body on to manually focus). I don't know if any other lens is like that. Maybe it has something to do with it.

The rechipping problem with Sigmas has typically first manifested itself by giving an Err99 when you went to stop down. If it stops down, you're not seeing the typical chipset problem. It might still be a chipset problem, but it'll be a new and different one. But this might be worth posting either in LF or EOS Forum for feedback.

You know she is looking at the 500... *sigh*

mmmmmm 500/4 ISL :D

first I was going to go for the bigma and still might if it works

then I thought about the 300 f2.8 and tc. but I'd have to sell something else to afford it and I don't want to...

and I really want photoshop cs3 but I may wait until fall, to buy that because I'm really considering going back to college.

You may not like the Bigma, it's 1.5 pounds heavier than the biggest glass you currently own.. AND no IS, which makes it even more challenging to handhold. Of course if you're going to toss it on a Wimberley Sidekick that makes light work of the handhold/IS bit, but then you have to cart 8 pounds of tripod into the field. The good news is that the ballhead I sold you is Sidekick-ready. :)

And f/6.3 is slow.....

Would you CARRY the 300/2.8? Or worse, is Puddle going to carry it as well as pay for it

I had to ask myself that question. It's likely I won't carry my 300/2.8 to many places, but then again it is a trophy lens. Its purpose is to look good and make me feel better. So it's quite OK even if I sit it in the house most of the time...

College......my condolences.

the only way I'd ever own the 300 f2.8IS would be if I sold my M3 & 300F4 IS and bought the 5D and it. I don't want to do that...sooooo...I think I'll just figure something else out. I really don't think the bigma works on my camera. I spent a long time with it today and no matter what mode I had it in, no AF.

Looks like the scanner's about the same vintage as the camera, judging by the raster lines on the pic.

Thank you for noticing that....I thought I was the only person that noticed the clear digital imprint! Sigma compatibility issues? Recall the Bigma works by 'lying' to the camera that it's a f/5.6 lens at the long end. Maybe your M3 is too smart for it ;)

I had a Bigma once upon a time.. I am sorry to say that while it was a nice lens it was too much for me to handle. The 1-4 and I get along much better thanks to lighter weight and IS.

I know you said you'd never go back to crop cameras once upon a time (you did anyway with the M3) but consider the 40D. This is for the boids, yes? The 40D will (I don't give a flying @$!@# about what the carp factor crew think) give you more reach AND more MP to crop in close. That'll give you the $$ to buy the 300/2.8, which IMO is a better investment (doesn't depreciate, doesn't give AF problems).

Then if you want UWA, you can also have your cake and eat it because there are dedicated UWA solutions for 1.6x, compared to the lack thereof for 1.3x. mmmmm, Canon 10-22. That looks and acts like the 17-40 on 5D.

You aren't giving up much. I know the 5D has that Extra Special Edge, it does, but the 40D is so close it might just work too.

Yeah, that is why I'm really not seriously thinking of selling the M3 anymore. It just seems way too heavy.

But I have a bit of problem with CA (more so with the M3 than the 30D or 5D) with the 300 F4IS and any tc...so I was looking for something longer with no tc for birding. And that isn't a budget killer.

Yes, I recall you've always been concerned about weight. That's ok - so am I! It's good to think about what we're opting into.

300/4 + 1.4x + 1.3x (M3) = 546

400 + 1.6x (40D) = 640

Tru dat. Puddle owes us one for saving him $$ ;)

The Gitzo GT1530 is good for a light 400/5.6 setup. TECHNICALLY this rig is not recommended for focal lengths > 400mm, but the way I see it, I work at lower FL's most of the time, and exceeding a tripod's maximum rating still beats "no tripod" hands down.

I will always be the bane to the Lens Forum types. I have no real interest in the 50L or the 35L. I've had the 35 f/2 and rarely used it. Rarely, as in, I used it once in the year I owned it. As for the 50L, well, I've got the 50 f/1.4 at my disposal, and it's a wonderful lens. No need there, either.
