I am looking for an affordable long zoom for wildife. I will only use it occasionaly so cannot justify big $$.
I know that this lens' maximum aperture will create some issues with autofocus, but other than that does anyone have issues or good things to say about this lens?
How about other bargain solutions? The lens will be used maybe 4 times a year on various trips.
Thanks for your input.

I have one that I just bought for my 300D. I have not had any real issues with focusing. Read this for info on the focusing:

Cons so far:
It is not a fast lens
It is not the sharpest lens out there
IT IS HEAVY
86 MM Diameter=expensive filters
Pros:
Produces great color.
Very affordable.
Sharp enough for me even at 500MM.
500 MM Reach.
This is definitely not a hand-held lens (although I have done it and gotten decent results).

Have you looked at the Sigma 50-500mm EX?
It is a newer design,. has the faster HSM focus motor and is generally regarded to give better results despite its longer zoom range.
Of course it will cost more though.. but it may be worth looking at.
