Look on-line and check out some reviews of these lenses. I don't remember either of them impressing the hell out of everyone.

Well, I am looking to spend about $300 for a lens to compliment the kit lens. I am new to the Drebel so I want to slowly get my feet wet.

Since you are already up in the $300 range you might want to look at the Canon EF 28-135 IS though that doesn't sound long enough for you. Great lens by most people standards, very highly rated. However the 70-200 F/4L is a terrific bargain and incredibly rated. Maybe you save for another month or so and get it. I just saw one in the store the other day. It is very small and light. Unbelievable quality too. Better in low light than the ones you mentioned too. About $500 USD.

How do the first 2 compare to each other?

Skip the 75-300 in my opinion. I just tried it out in the BB store once and that was enough to make up my mind on that lens.

I did just get the Tamron 28-75 XR Di, which was about $339 I believe.... This lens has gotten some good reviews and I am VERY happy with it so far.

The 50mm 1.8 has also impressed me, at just $70. If you want to go more into the tele. lengths, I'd personally wait and get better glass. I too was considering the 75-300 to supplement my 300D kit lens a while back, and someone here talked me into buying the 70-200 f/4L for about $500 instead. I can't thank them enough!~ :)

Yeah,. if you can swing the cake.. grab the 70-200mm f/4L :)

As far as the 75-300mm lenses go.. there all pretty bad.. so If forced to chose.. I'd just get the cheapest one knowing that I'd be tossing it asap.

Those are the lens that I am considering myself! :P

Canon 50 f/1.8 II (almost ready to purchase soon)
Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 (seriously considering)
Canon 70-200 f/4L USM (almost sure)
Canon 17-40 f/4L USM (not sure about this one)

I basically want the best sharpness/quality for the price since I'm not a professional photographer. I hope my "lens line-up" is starting to take good shape. Hmmmmm.

I haven't shot anything formal w/my two new lenses yet, but I think the

28-75 Tamron
50 1.8
70-200 f/4

...together should be a good combo. I was also considering the 17-40L, like you, but decided that I really don't need to go that wide for most of what I do.

the 70-200 is great, and I think the 28-75 is pretty close to it as far as image quality. Its obviously not the same build-quality, but its not a bad build either. ...and the 50...man, I just love carrying this lens around. I'm sure it will become my most used lens for "fun" shooting and learning technique as it is so small/light, but offers great images!

Tamron 28-75 XR is a superb lens, but be careful as I've heard there are many 'softies' around, so when you buy make sure you can exchange it if a problem appears or better yet, test before you buy.

As far as the 70-300s go, I wouldn't touch them with a 5 foot pole. At least get the 28-135 IS. Or, if you desire straight quality 70-200 4.0.
