I am not usualy known by my portraits that are somewhat formal, I am always pushing the limist with photos in some creative way. But I did a favor for my girlfriends brother for his senior photos and I just did a quick shoot. Some c&c is needed. Also can someone tell me how you get some of those colors that I see in some of your photos. The color is so rich and vibrant. Mine is lacking that kind of color. -Andrew

What software do you use for post-processing?

Here is my edit. The three areas I concentrated on were:

Lightening shadows on his face

Desaturating and darkening the background.

Increasing saturation on his face.

Additionally, I brightened the eyes and teeth.

Also, your post is larger than the legal limit for the forum (800 pixels, max) so I the above is a link rather than a post. Download it and put it as a layer over your edition. Click it on and off and look at the changes.

Bright looking kid and good pose. There's a slight, but noticeable, green colour-cast; try colour balance to remove it. You'll find the reds richer. Also, try lightening over his eyes. Cropping out the bottom also helps for me.
