When you're on vacation or something similar when you can't copy your CF card to your PC?

There are a bunch of guys here who do..................Mostly for the reason that on a given day they take in excess 200-300 images and to save on the cost of the memory cards etc etc.

If you care, there are other methods of doing this using other storage devices. Some even have screens so you can look at the pictures...... they run about 350............. You can also find relatively cheaper alternatives........

Cheers.

Get the 4gig drive and storage almost becomes a non issue. About 600 RAW and over 1,000 Fine Large JPG.

See I have thought about this, but I am jsut paranoid that I am going to delete some shots that I thought were transferred but were not. So I lug my laptop around.

I use the Belkin Digital Camera Link. It's basically a USB port in your iPod. You can connect your camera or a card reader. It transfers 256MB in about 7 minutes. You can transfer up to 2 Gb before the iPod battery runs out. You can check how many files were transfered in the end of the process or run a check through the Digital Camera Link. I think it's pretty neat device. It goes for about $90.

I use my iriver 20gig mp3 player for traveling storage. After transferring 1200 pictures to it I've only had one that transferred part of the way. I can live with that.

I use both my Archos Jukebox Multimedia and the iPod w/ the Belkin card reader.

And I have to say...........the iPod is painstakingly slow!!! The Archos is a tad faster............the interface is just not as good though.............

It's still better than lugging a laptop around......yeah??

I'm thinking seriously about getting an Apacer Disk Steno, that writes CD-R's on the spot. The quoted transfer times look a lot better that what I've seen with the current crop of other things. I currently have an XsDriveII, and it takes *forever* to copy a 512MB CF over to the hard drive. Plus, I've no end of USB 2.0 connections problems with it on my desktop system. Every other USB 2.0 device I have works flawlessly.

The Disk Steno also can play back images on a TV, but lacks its own display. But still, for less than $250, it seems like a good solution to all this mess. If you burn two CDs, and keep one/ship one, or put one in your carry on and one in your checked luggage, you can be reasonably certain of getting your images home. Also, if you break the Apacer, you don't lose all your data, like a portable hard drive solution.

I just wish I could find it in a local store, so I could look at it up close. So far, I've only found online retailers. Luminous landscape likes it, BTW, and hails it as the solution for not dragging your laptop out into the field. He still brings the laptop along on the trip, though, but leaves it at camp/in the hotel room, so he can review and copy up all the day's shots. That way, you have three (3) copies of your shots. Hopefully, that will be sufficient for the most paranoid.

As far as battery life goes, I think I recall someone saying they could write 30 CD's worth on one battery charge. That's quite a lot of gigabytes, in my book. I think there is a new model that will do DVD's, as well. It will do multi-session and span CDs, but don't know if there is such a thing for DVDs. I'd rather write 512MB CFs of RAWs to 640 MB CDs and close them, anyway, just for safety's sake.
