It seems like you shot them from far far away. :)

Dale,

Shots of baseball from the stands in MLB parks are challenging, even with the best of equipment. You've stripped the EXIF data (man, I feel like I type this 10 times a day) on your posted images so those looking at them can't tell much about how they were shot, since we we don't have a baseline from which to offer advice.

So, I'm flying blind, but here I go: The shot of Trevor Hoffman is way too soft, and the whites are blown out. You can see the softness around his name on the back of his jersey - it's all fuzzy, as is his number. The blown highlights are evident in the fact that there is almost no detail in his jersey - it's mostly one bright white blob. A properly exposed white uniform would show cloth texture and many, many shadows from wrinkles. It's hard to find any shadows in the back of his uni.

The batter shot (looks like Khalil Greene?) is very similar. The catcher is almost in focus, but the batter is very soft (and before anyone says this is motion blur, it's not - he's not even moving yet). If I knew the aperture and the shutter speed at which this shot was taken, I might be able to tell you why I thought the image was soft, but without this, it's hard to speculate. I'm guessing this shot suffers from a depth of field issue since the catcher and ump appear sharper than the batter, but this is contradicted by the fact that the batter's box looks relatively sharp all the way around the batter.

All the softness may (I said may) just be from blowing out the highlights, either in exposure or post processing.

Also, your shots aren't really showing any action. They are captures of moments between action, and as a result, could be better timed.

Hope this helps.

Dennis
