 Newbie here with a simple problem that I can't figure out:

The flash pops up by will not fire under any setting. Flash setting is set on automatic. IS setting is ON.

Is there another setting that I might have inadvertently enabled that would cancel the flash? Does the 'flash lamp' ever need to be replaced?

Any suggestions would be appreciated....thanks!

Is this camera new to you or have you owned it for awhile? I guess what I'm getting at is...has the flash worked in the past and just started to not work or did you receive this camera used and it's never worked for you? Have you taken the flash out of auto and put it so it will always flash? I have the S2 and I have to physically open up my flash, but I do have the ability to tell the camera that I always want the flash to go off even when the camera thinks it doesn't need to. I hope I haven't confused you more, I just thought I would take a stab at helping you since no one else has.

Thanks for your reply, Cindy! I have had the S1 since new....the pop-up and flash have always worked until a couple weeks ago. The pop-up still works but the flash never fires....no matter what the lighting condition....thus dark/very dark pics.
-All that I can think of is some sort of loose connection, but I don't recall any inadvertent bumps etc.
-Or, does the flash need a newer set of rechargeable batteries...perhaps higher power than the other camera functions?

The 'automatic' icon shows in viewfinder so I don't think the function setting is the problem....

You aren't out anything by trying a new set of batteries to see if that helps. Sorry I can't help you any further. Good luck! :)
