This is only based on information we have to hand.

Now assuming that the the 40D has reached the maximum pixel density, then the 1DsMkIV should by my calculations have a sensor that uses 5.7ym pixel pitch.

For a full frame, that would translate to a resolution of 6315 x 4211 or 26.6MP.

I think that until the size of the sensor increases, that's about the best they can get. You could of course shave a 0.1ym off and then you would get a res of 6428 x 4286 = 27.5MP.

Realistic? Too releasitic? They have shown they can do that res now (40D) so I expect it would be possible to do a FF version of that sensor.

Curious.. Why assume that's the maximum pixel density?

Because the noise after that will be truely awful, see how much better the 5D controls it with a density pitch of 8.2ym. then without hard ware noise reduction, it cannot be better.

Canon is is supposedly working on 40-50MP sensors.

I think it's high time to abandon good old bayer layout technology and start looking into some layered designs (sigma??)

can't find the damned key....

Jesus, Mark IV rumors already?

I'd rather have them keep 21 megapixels but introduce a non-Bayer sensor.
