S30 as webcan

Is there any way to use the s30 as a webcam, i.e., use it with videoconferencing apps such as netmeeting?

I was wondering about this a little while ago myself and found this on canon's powershot website in their knowledge base.

Can I use my Canon digital camera as a webcam?

The Remote Capture software included on the Canon Digital Camera Solutions Disk provides the capability to take and store images remotely using your computer via the USB connection. This is not the same as providing real-time, live video feed to a web server. Apparently some people have been successful in using their Canon digital camera as a webcam utilizing the Audio/Video Out port (if your camera is so equipped). Canon does not recommend using your camera in this manner.

The picture resolution capabilities of your Canon digital camera far exceed the requirements of even a high-quality webcam. Using your digital camera as a webcam would be similar to using a 100-piece symphony orchestra for a high school dance instead of a 5-piece combo. The symphony could obviously fulfill the requirement for music, but the type of music presented may not be exactly what the dancers want. And setting up the auditorium for the symphony would require more time, equipment and expertise than it would for the combo.

Our recommendation is to get a built-for-the-purpose webcam if you wish to send live video over the web. They are quite inexpensive, very easy to install and set up, and are designed for continuous use.

Yes but can it be done I have a Canon Powershot A40 and dont want to buy another camera just for the limited amounts of time I teleconference

If you have a TV-card with a video-in jack it'll work. I have a Hauppauge WinTV pci card. It'll work with Microsoft Net Meeting. The only downside is that even with the auto shut-off setting turned off, the S30 LCD will shut off after a short period of time, which will amount to recording audio against a blue video background. All you have to do is press any button periodically and this won't be a problem though. The most basic model of the pci card is $50, and also allows you to watch tv on your computer.

Will it work on my Geforce3Ti 200 MSI video card which has a digital vdeo input.

I'm not sure. The connection on mine is analog. You could try it, but I don't think it would work the same.

I would advise against using the S40 or S30/S20 as a webcam. The camera does heat up after a while when using it as a camera so leaving it on all the time as a webcam is something I would not do. I have no technical foundation for this comment but I would think that having the CCD on all the time is also likely to reduce its life expectancy.

I have used the Remote Capture software which allows you to effectively use it as a webcam but I only used it out of curiosity.

I agree that if you want a webcam buy a webcam - that will free up your S40 for its true purpose to be a camera!

If yes,what does it differ from recomended NiMH ones? will it affect life of camera?
