lightroom 1.2 enable or disable XMP?

with the new version 1.2 is better enable or disable Automatically write changes innto XMP?

I've heard conflicting stories of whther this was completely sorted out or not.

It may also depend on your system whether you see a performance hit.

Either way, when you first turn it on with a large album, you need to let it chug away until its done... may take quite awhile. Only then will you be able to judge the performance on your system.

I'd leave it turned off still at the moment, and use Ctrl-S/Cmd-S to write to XMP at a convenient time.

1.2 fixed SOME of the bugs, but not all, so there is still a substantial performance hit on most systems. If you do need it turned on, definitely do as David suggested and leave it to do it's work before you try and use it. And don't turn it on and off repeatedly as that confuses it.
