Thanks for entering the "Show me what you've got" Photo competition.

Since I believe it's the photographer and not the gear that makes a photo, I've decided to "put my money where my mouth is". The prize at the end of the competition is a $25 gift card for B&H photo (provided by me) & recognition as this contests first ever Photographer Hall of Fame winner!

I want to see what photos we are shooting on a regular basis, so this is a 52 week competition. Post your best shot each week and at the end of the week, the top 3 photos of the week (chosen by me) will be listed. Those photos will be judged again at the end of the month (by a small group of people I've selected) against the other weekly winners for that month and the Top 3 for the month out of that group will be entered in to the Final competition for the gift certificate.

I was inspired by the book and the excellent submissions from all ranks of photographers and cameras. So with each submission, please include your exif (for those that don't have exif readers) and your camera/lens that you used to take the shots. P&S owners, just include which p&s you used.

Each week's photo submissions will end every Friday night 9pm pst. The weeks winners will be posted here every Sunday night by 6pm pst. The month's winners (and entries for the gift card) will also be posted here, as soon as the judges have finished voting.

There are some rules though, so be sure you read through them before you enter your photos. If the rules are broken, your photos will be disqualified and you won't be eligible for the prize.

POST YOUR PHOTO SUBMISSIONS HERE :
Sept 07 here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=3966279#post3966279)
OCT 07 HERE (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=4037687#post4037687)

PLEASE KEEP THE PHOTO THREADS for PHOTOS ONLY. Any comments relevant to photos should be posted on this thread. Thanks!

RULES:
1. Rule is amended and combined with #3...PLEASE SEE 3 FOR THE NEW RULE.

2. You may enter only one photo a week.

3. NEW RULE: (and this will be amended to the first post) All cameras are allowed AS LONG as you are an active member of POTN, and not just here for the contest :) And just a reminder: banning disqualifies you from the contest.

4. The photo must be your own, original work.

5. If you are "banned from the forums" during the competition, your photos will be disqualified from the prize drawing.

6. You may enter any photo you like (landscape, macro, sports etc) EXCEPT nude (since this is not the G&N section).

7. You do not have to enter every week, but obviously if you do, you'll have a better chance of being one of the top 3 for the month.

NOTE: PLEASE REMOVE ALL WATERMARKS FROM YOUR PHOTOS TO ALLOW THE JUDGES AN UNBIASED OPPORTUNITY TO SCORE YOUR PHOTOS. Thanks!

Contest ends Sept 15th 2008. On Oct. 1st 2008, the top 36 photos (3 from each month) will be posted for everyone to see and on Oct. 15th 2008 the winning photo will be announced and the gift card awarded.

Good luck and have fun. You have 52 opportunities to post your best shots.

EDIT:
I've had several people ask where they can view the monthly winners and the competition for the year end gift card. I've set up the photos here for viewing...all the month winners will be posted here and the voting will be done out of this gallery.

also, if you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask.

I'm on a crusade to forget about what gear you don't have and show us what you can do with what you do have!!

Do we post photos here, or link to photos hosted elsewhere?
Also, does the first week start now or coming up Sunday?

Great idea for a competition, by the way, and I'm excited to participate. :D

Permagrin
19th of September 2007 (Wed), 18:19
You can start posting photos now. This first "week" is a short week so...there may not be many photos in it's competition. Normal weeks end on Friday at 9pm pst and new submissions will be considered for the following week.

Hi Permie... does the shot have to be taken that week? (just clarifying)... probably misread the rules :|

Permagrin
19th of September 2007 (Wed), 18:23
I should have been more clear...no, it doesn't have to be taken that week.

I am trying to promote the "get out there and take those photographs" mindset but understand that people have lives/jobs/family....so while I am encouraging everyone to offer new stuff, this competition isn't limited to that.

Permagrin
19th of September 2007 (Wed), 18:54
oh I see...well, I guess I'll say that you can make one change if you wish, as long as it's on your original post and not a new submission (otherwise we may get confused and think that you've submitted twice for the week, which is against the rules).

OK cool

I don't think it'd happen... mainly cos we could just wait till next week anyway and have the option of both in a month... but just in case ;)

Great idea Permie. One question only though....is there a limit to how much post processing that can be done? Not like I am a whiz at PP, but there are some out there that can make my ok shot look unbelivable or even combine more than one shot into one digital manipulation. Just a thought.

You said Canon cameras. Would it be ok if it's not digital?

no limit to pp...you can manipulate it as much as you like but I should say that the judges for each month's shots really vary on their opinions of highly manipulated photos. Some like it some don't...in the end, it's entirely up to you what you submit.

Any canon camera is fine, including film. Just list what it is.

Hypothetical:

What if I post a pic and it doesn't make it into the Big Three for the week. Can I post it again, or is that against the forum rules? Is there a one shot rule?

Also:

Are we allowed to only post shots taken that week, or can we bring out pics from the past?

Well, I think, since there are some very good photos already posted that might not get chosen this week, just because there are so many good ones, that we should say you can repost your shots up to 3x if it hasn't won. But no more...as in, you can't post the same shot 52 times

and as for part two of the question:
I should have been more clear...no, it doesn't have to be taken that week.

Great idea, Permie, I'll be adding this to my favorites in the hopes of having pictures worthy of submitting on a regular basis.

One question while it is early in the competition. OK to have frames/watermarks or would you rather them be clean?

Permagrin
23rd of September 2007 (Sun), 18:31
Becky, it's okay to have frames. You can have a watermark if it doesn't obscure the main body of the photo (like it's in a corner...not in the middle)...just so that it doesn't detract from the shot because it will likely influence the judges opinions on the monthly decision.

WINNERS OF WEEK ONE

Okay, first I have to say that this choice was very difficult, there were so many excellent photos posted. Thank you all for sharing your work! I hope you will continue to enrich the competition with your photos.

I decided that since this was a short month I'd choose 4 shots this week and next week (the rest of the time, except Sept. of '08 ) it will be 3/week) so that there will be at least 8 to offer the judges at the end of this month. So without further ado, these are the winners (and these photos are entered into the Sept. end of the month judging):

30D
Tamron 28-75
f 4.5
1/60 sec
ISO 640

Converted from RAW in Adobe Lightroom
Creative PP done in PS Cs2

I used a single SB-24 from below and to the left of the rider on 1/4 power. I underexposed the background by 2 stops. Manual, 1/50 @ f4.5. ISO 100. Canon 30D w/Tamron 17-50 f2.8 @ 25mm. Only PP was cropping, resizing and a small amount of USM.

I wanted to thank everyone again for your submissions. Really, I loved seeing your shots but I also really appreciated being able to check out the exif and see how you were doing them. The night shots were fantastic and so informative...and the action as well. Though all the shots were very good, I thought I might give you a some explanation as to why I chose the shots I did.

Grimm75, I'm a bird shooter and often have attempted to catch a dragon in flight...I don't know if anyone else will realize how hard it is to do at all, let alone do well. That was a fantastic capture. The perfect bokeh and yet the absolutely perfect dof for the details of dragonfly...excellent shot.

Kody, the giant's causeway shot is so beautiful. I loved how you balanced out the rich colors with the perfect exposure. You kept the details of the causeway and yet didn't lose any of the sunset (or sunrise) dark feel. It was so well done.

tadrscin, your bicycle shot was just an excellent pan capture...the background was so perfectly blurred and the subject so perfectly frozen. It really stood out as a well done shot.

and Cat, that shot of Marian is beautiful. It has all the things I think are key to a good portrait. Practically it's well lit and nicely composed. And what really draws a person to it is that you seem to have "captured" her personality with the shot...and to me, that's the key to an excellent portrait. You can have the practical things down but still not draw your audience in...you've done both.

so well done again, to everyone who participated for the week. :)

That was a really remarkable shot. I loved the timing and it taught me something about Ladybugs. Both of these combined made it a winner for me.

All the shots were great, but the 3 I picked really stood out for me. This is the first time I've judged photos. I have to say that I really enjoyed it. It made me really think about what made me react to each shot.

okay, this is a weird month....usually the judges agree pretty unanimously on the top three but not this month. (they all vote anonymously and I tally their scores) So...after adding them up we've got some tie scores and I've decided rather than voting them down to three, I'll allow all 5 into the end of the year contest.
