Something ain't right...

I purchased this from B&H a couple of months ago... of course I cant find my receipt. What should I do? I've never had any equipment fail before.

The same at f/1.8 and f/22 - it doesn't stop down anymore. Does it do this on your 10D as well as on your 300D?

What to do: Search for the receipt. If that fails, buy a new one, because they are cheap, and this time keep the receipt in a safe place!! :?

Spend 10 bucks on a repair manual.

Does this on both cameras...

Since this was an online purchase B&H was able to e-mail me a copy of the receipt. Its being sent off.... I know its an inexpensive lens, but its still a pain.

Are lenses easy to repair? I have never attempted it.

I'm guessing you mean the aperture doesn't stop down at all?

That will likely not be worth repairing.
Clean the contacts on both the camera and lens first

So on Manual setting you can close down the aperture and the picture does not darken at all? That would be a more definite test for whether or not it was working. The DOF on some lenses changes so minimally with a close-range shot that I am not completely convinced that those results are somewhat excuseable.

See if you are getting less light at f22 and that would be a better indication to me. Otherwise, maybe one of the blades is missing.

I was going to say since oyu bought online they have the record of it
but you got it. let me know how it goes with them on getting the repairs done and getting it back to you, worried about this myself.

buy a new one, take back the old one on the new receipt and say it's broke so you want your money back.

To check whether the lens aperture works, set Av mode, press and hold the DOF preview button and rotate the command dial to change the aperture. If the picture in the viewfinder doesn't change its brightness - the lens is faulty and you should replace it.

Good suggestion. I'd only add that you should set the Av to a high number like 22.

Watch out, you could find out that the DOF preview and the lens don't work.

My 50 mm f/1.8 just took a crap on my today. Aperture blades are sticking like a mother - giving me ERR 99 on the DRebel. Still under warranty though; taking it in for service first thing tomorrow.
