I just recently bought a Digital Rebel and I've been using the same 1GB card I used with my dad's 10D. On July 8th my last picture was numbered 971 and then 2 days later when I took pictures again it decided to start at 6001. I'm not sure exactly why it did this I'm hoping someone else knows. I normally don't reformat the card I just use the delete all option. Also another problem I had was I was taking pictures of a very small inch worm and for some odd reason it wasn't recording the pictures so I took the card out and put it back in and took a few pics and it showed them as being saved. When I got home I noticed it had saved the other pictures that didn't show up but saved them at a later number. Any ideas of what is going on?

It's probably a case of swapping the card between cameras. If you used the card in you dad's camera (I'll bet his counter is at about 6,000) the counter in your camera will reset itself at the higher number. I made this mistake when I had two 10Ds. Overnight the new camera showed 3,000 pictures which, by no small coincidence, was what was on the older body.
As far as I know, there's no way to reset it (the bad news). There's nothing wrong with your CF card (the good news).

I was thinking that was the case but it wasn't. I haven't used the 10D since I bought the Rebel and that card has only been in the Rebel since then. Also the last picture I took with the 10D was 6324.

Every time you dump your images to a computer, then reformat the CF card in the camera. It is quicker than deleting, and it is more effective.

Swapping cards between cameras is a problem. The only way around it is to format the card on the computer (PC format) before swapping. Otherwise the camera will "inherit" the other camera's numbering. Formatting the card in the camera does not effect the "inheritance".

It is not because of swapping between cameras that card has never been in the other camera since I bought the new one so that is not the problem.

It isn't hard to see how we might have gotten the wrong idea. In fact, I'm very confused right about now. :? :?

Ok hopefully I can explain it better. I've had my new Rebel since the 1st of July. I am using the same card I used before when I had my dad's 10D which I stopped using when I got my new camera so it has never been back in the 10D since then. For the first week or so it was numbering just fine starting at 0001 and on then on the 9th my last picture was 971. The next time I took picture was on the 11th it went from the 971 and skipped all the way to 6001 which I have no idea why it skipped 972-6000. The other odd thing about the card was for some odd reason it wouldnt save the pictures when I went back to look through the pics they wouldnt show up on the camera so I had to take the card out and put it back in. After that I continued taking pictures and when I downloaded them on to my computer I found the missing photos but they were saved on a later point on the card.

Just checking...
Anyway, I have never heard a hint of this issue ever. There's no reason I can fathom to why this has happened since there apparently was no card switching.

Can't try it where I am at the moment but can't you just rename the folder and a file in, for example, windows explorer and then cam will pick up next number???

Now this seems to be happening to me - I have a Pretec 1GB card.
My previous camera was a 10D, and I took 6500 or so shots with it. I have taken approximately 1200 images with my 20D since new (last fall).
Today, when I downloaded some images to my computer, the images were numbered at 65xx. Last week however, the images were stilll being numbered from 12xx.
WTF?
Should I load the card into my reader and toss everything on the card into the trash?

If you ejected a CF card from the camera while a write process was happening, then you are almost sure to get corruption on the card. From then on, all sorts of things can get screwy.
If that happened to me, I would do three things. First, I would take the CF card to a card reader and do a full format on it. Second, I would remove the camera's main battery and memory battery so that it forgets everything about shot counts. Third, I would put the CF card back in and have the camera do its standard quick format. Now, things are ready to run.

Thanks, Bob. The camera had finished the writing process and I had already turned it off, and changed lenses before I ejected the card.
I will take some more pictures tomorrow and check if the same problem happens again (probably should have done that today when I noticed it in the first place). If so, I will follow your suggestion.
