View Full Version : Hoodies or Caps?

Actually what I am talking about is the age old debate about LCD protective caps. Got one? Should you have one? I currently don't have one. But I have thought about it since I have a propensity to toss my Rebel in my backpack when I am on the run.
Check this (http://www.hoodmanusa.com/slr.asp).
Now as for the bellows thing, I don't know. My hand works pretty well. And my camera magnifies so why would I want a magnifying hood?
What I need is a magnifying eyepiece.
Thought? Comments?

Can't comment yet. I ordered one for my 10D which should be here later this week.
I have ordered many products from Hoodman. I have used their protective screens for my G2 screen and my 2 video cameras. Have also gone with the laptop hood and LCD cleaning cloths (wet and dry combos) for my laptop and PocketPC. The company has been great and each product has worked very well. I expect the same from this one.
The bellows/magnifier looks a bit much. I understand that there is already a protective screen on the 10D (in that the LCD is protected) but this makes sense to me for resale if nothing else.
Just my $.02

For 10 bucks you can get a pack of PDA protectors at Staples and have a lifetime supply of LCD protectors.

Oh this one again. ;)
IMO, LCD protectors are a waste of money. However, if you are particularly rough with your equipment, then I would recommend a cover of some sort. Otherwise, avoid them like the plague.
They reduce the view and clarity of the LCD. And you can buy a brand-spanking-new cover for the 10D for about $10.
Anyway, it's a personal choice. I like the clear view of a non-protected LCD cover, and I have yet to scratch one in the last 4 years that I have been using both digital cameras and PDA's.

Hope that you dig the Pro Control. Let me know how it works out. Me? I guess I am just cheap. So I will keep on using my hand over the LCD.
But, since as far as I know, you can't replace the plastic cover over the 300D LCD I will decide between the cover and the protect PDA things. Depending on what Control says :p

Isn't one of the main reasons we are in the EOS forum because we all own a dSLR camera? If that is indeed true, then why would such bellows be necessary given you only need the lcd to review images? It is easy to screen the lcd from the sunlight when you *need* to look at it; however, I find rarely myself bothering to review the images. I just take a couple, check the exposure meter and move on. Besides I think those bellows would be awkward and a pain to work with or around.

i don't think they're needed for a dslr. i used an extendaview on my G3. it was like a 2X magnifier. very helpful if your trying to manual focus a P&S.

Wouldn't one of those bellowed lcd covers make it nearly impossible to look thru the viewfinder? At the very least, it would be very uncomfortable.
My nose already pokes at the lcd when I take pictures. If it was pulled out even further, I would go mad!

It is nothing more than a thick piece of plastic held into a recesss with some double-sided sticky tape. I takes less than five minutes to swap and is around $10 plus a bit for the tape if you buy that from Canon too. It isn't the LCD as some people think. The LCD is underneath and has the name Sony staring at you when you take the cover off.
I have done a couple for friends and it is an easy job. My cameras are really abused and the LCD covers are hardly scratched. I'd only worry about it when you come to sell it. The replacement is the cheaper solution.

Cool. Thanks so much for that information. I know that there was a layer of plastic over the actual LCD but I assumed that it was a really involved process to get it out and I didn't know you could order them.
Ya' learn something new everyday.
