i have grain surgery but i've found it to be pretty worthless so far. all it does is blur the hell out of my images. is there anything else i can try that is mac compatible?
looks like noise ninja is my next choice. has anyone used both?

I use Dfine Selective 1.0 by NIK Multimedia http://www.nikmultimedia.com/dfine/usa/entry.php?&info=help/dfine_selective.shtml
I like the results I get with it. It's a PS plugin. They have (for extra cost) profiles for various cameras' characteristics, including the 10D. I don't know if they've got a profile for the DRebel or other Canons.

Something else to consider (if you have or need Office2004) is Virtual PC (version 7 now comes with OSX ver of OFFICE).
NeatImage actually runs pretty well on a 500mhz G4 using VirtualPC - I upgraded memory to 1gig and processor to 1.25ghz and performance is respectable. My hope is that NeatImage will move faster on their OSX product - it's really a nice program.
Virtual PC option not viable if you don't need the program for anything else...

Here's a shot at it... (Neat Image on a G4 with Virtual PC)

Seems to work pretty good for the noise, but the shot also seems to have lost the teeniest bit of the feel of depth somehow. Maybe add a touch of sharpening after the noise removal?

Here it is with Neat Image at reduced strength allowing more detail and a bit of noise to remain.

Thats a nice touch, Dale. Actually I was attempting to demonstrate (or proving to myself) that the current version of NeatImage actually runs on a Mac with acceptable performance. In real life I never run NR on an image as small as the sample available, and then only to remove my 10D "noise fingerprint" (I rarely sample the actual image for noise analysis) - generally/always use a custom profile created for the specific camera/lens/aperature/ISO combination - there's too much opportunity for degrading detail otherwise, certainly for my level of expertise with NeatImage.
Again... nice work with NI parameters.

Fortunately, the objectionable noise appeared to be in the blue sky areas, so I just took small samples from a few areas of unobstructed blue sky and used it for the profile. Too much detail throughout the image to get a real good sample any other way.
