I see that the 3021BPro + 488RC2 combination is often recommended here as a good setup. Does it handle the 100-400L lens well ? I'm also curious to know what other setup others recommend ?
Thanks.

Yes, I own that, and it works quite well.
Having said that, when it comes to stability at 400mm when shotting, it is OK, but not really great.
I think you'll find many Really Right Stuff customers around.

The 3021B Pro is what I use with the 488RC4 (larger foot than the RC2).
Works real well with my 100-400.
Best tripod I have ever owned.

Yes absolutely. Best setup for the money, or a lot more money.

3021B Pro is fine for the lens however, I am not too keen on using my 400mm f/5.6L lens (on 30D camera) and the 488RC2 head. The weight and size of the 400mm should be close to that of the 100-400 zoom.
The head is O.K. for static shots. However, I am not keen on the head for any type of follow action shots because on my head, it seems like I can only have it completely loose or completely tight. There is no mid-way setting to dampen the panning or tilt motion.

I guess I'll be shooting with the 400mm end most of the time, so stability and ease of use is very important at that end.. I intend to use it for wildlife. any other recommendations for the head ?
