I have recently bought a second hand Canon 100-400 IS L zoom lens which I am extremely pleased with. :D However, there was no manual with the lens and I am cannot figure out through use, the difference between Mode 1 and Mode 2 in terms of the IS function. They both seem to do the same thing, but there must be a difference.
For the most part I am into airshows and motor racing, so the ability to pan both horizontally and sometimes vertically are the main requirements.
Can anyone help me out here :?:
Thanks

Mode 2 is for horizontal panning; mode 1 is for shooting an erratically
moving or stationary object.

What he said but take the "erratically moving" part out. :D

Thanks for the quick replies. I guess it's mode 2 for me then.
Cheers

in mode 2 the element in the lens only moving on one axis (you have no stabilization vertically speaking). Used mostly on some kind of support.

Took some finding - I've been looking around for about a year and the only ones to appear were the usual eBay imports from Hong Kong (which didn't appeal for some reason), or the occasional s/h lens in the US.
Being based in the UK it was not going to be 'easy' for both parties, I didn't necessarily know what I was getting, and the sellers tended to be reluctant to ship the goods out of the US. (especially to someone without a visible track record of purchasing through the bulletin boards)
At the end of the day however, I guess it's all about trust. A few emails back and forth tends to give a good idea of who your talking to.
I'm happy, got an immaculate and hardly ever used lens and it saved me a bundle over what I would have to have paid for a new one in the UK !!
Keep looking - it's worth it.

For anyone based in the UK looking for this lens (or others!), consider a trip to Andorra.
Prices can be negotiated to within a very fine hair's breadth of US prices. And I believe Canon lenses come with intl. warranty.
I paid 2/3s of the UK price.
Superb lens too!
