Canon has today announced the PowerShot A85 a replacement to the entry-level PowerShot A70 which Canon are claiming was "one of the most successful cameras in Canon's seventy year history". The A85 is a four megapixel three times zoom but has been upgraded with several improvements we saw introduced in the PowerShot A75 including six new 'special scene modes', 9-point AiAF, VGA movie clips (10 fps, up to 30 secs) and a larger 1.8" LCD monitor. The A85 also features Canon's single-button Print/Share feature for immediate transfer to a USB connected PC or Printer.

It seems more like a 4-megapixel A75 with a better zoom. Of course, we still don't know if this model will be sold in the U.S. do we?

Also, the sensor is smaller than the A80. Size is same as the A60!

So the A85 is really a downgrade from an A80... Go figure... Should have named it A77...

Same thing they did in the ZR series - the ZR-80's the successor to the ZR-60, not the much more capable ZR-70. You have to go all the way to the ZR-90 for the ZR-70 successor. So look for a forthcoming A90 upgrade to the A80 - same lens and look but a higher resolution (5? 6? MP) sensor and the new DiG!C processor, with better movie capabilities.

Right, and maybe a 1.8" screen..

You think it'd fit without a fairly sizable redesign of case and internal layout? it'd be nice, but I'm not holding my breath on that. It'd depend on there being some free space in the swing-out housing to fit a larger screen.

I have no idea how much it costs..But, if the price is nearly the same as the A70 (afterall its an upgrade to A70 right?) then it might do well...
