I would appreciate input on best lens and f-stop settings for group settings such as team or school pictures. I have had some problems with blurry pics with my 24-70l lens in the past. Of course these are 8 year olds and trying to shoot a still target is a real challenge. Would I have better luck with a wide angle lens?

wide angle would be better for group shot, also smaller apertures, for a wide angle, i'd say at least f8 and above, IMO

Thanks. Guess I know what my next investment will be. Seems most feel the 17-40 is the better choice than the 2.8 16-35 but I will have to research this more.

Depending on how much room you have around you. I shoot little league & school pictures. F/8 to f/11 is good DOF to make sure all the rows is sharp. I mostly use my 28-70 f/2.8 but if I have enough room I'll use the 70-200.
I had a NFL free camp where it close to 100 people then I had to use the 17-40.

Also try setting the shutter speed @ 1/125 and take multiple shots with flash. The flash will stop any movement. Multiple shots help catches everyone eyes open. I hate when I'm done and one person has there eyes closed.
