I would like to know what would be involved in setting up a small "portable" studio. This will be in my dining room for family portraits, etc. Now, that being said I will need a basic lighting set up and back drop set up. What did you first start with?

Any feed back will be appreciated.

Get the B&H lighting catalog. Everything you need to know about lighting equipment and availability is there.

I would start with a backdrop stand Dbl stand for cloth or a single for the twist a flex backdrops

Two light set up 320 watts & A reflector make sure the brand you start with you can add on to it. Also a light meter is handy to get those ratios right.

This works I've taken classses & have the muslin setup in my dining room it was cheaper than getting a dining room set :D

I started out with the 550 & 420 but now I'm using two 320 watt alien bees & getting ready to add on with white lightning. all light mod devices is interchangable. price wise Aliens was a better buy.

A few years ago, I bought some equipment from Steve Kaeser backgrounds & accessories. He had very reasonable prices and good kits. Here is a link to his website: http://www.skaeser.com/
