finally got my tamron 28-75 from calumet (they pricematch b&h, only 100% though--oh well, at least i picked it up around the block for the weekend).
so before i do any fooling around and open this sucker, what couple of things should i test for to tell if my lens is good-to-go or in perfect shape (cause i read about people getting duds)??? TIA

Use it like you would use any other lens.........If you like what you see, then you probably got a good one :-)

coo but besides testing at wide-open f2.8 on different focal lengths, anything else to watch for?

anyone have time to check out some test pics? i took double-shots from the 50mm @ f2.8, and the tamron @ f2.8 at 28, 50, and 75. w/ flash and flash off if that really matters.
just PM me, and i'll send you a link. i hadn't had the time to post-process or shrink the files down yet...so yah
TIA

Here is a link to just the article that you need.

This is from a person who frequents the Fred Miranda board. I found the article interesting and helpful. Good luck with the new lens.

Good link Rob. Petteri always has some good ideas. I thought this summary comment was especially useful:
The most useful test of a lens is to see how it is at its worst. So, to do this, shoot a few frames at maximum tele, wide-open, and near-infinity... and then look at the corners. If they look mostly OK, the lens is likely to be a star performer. If not, stop down a notch or two. If they're still not OK, the lens is likely to be a dog.
And remember to have fun: if you'd rather spend your time taking pictures than testing lenses, more power to you.

Rob
