Because at $3800 each, noone (relatively) was buying, regardless of how good it is.

We all want one. Awesome lens. It would be a lot of fun to have a 1.8 at 200mm. You could take picutes of people's nose hairs and leave their noses out of focus!! Low light weddings and receptions would be a great use for this lens.
I saw a post in another thread here today (can't seem to find it now...) that word has it that N**** may come out with a 200 f/2.0. Given that and the surge in all of us crazy people who stay awake at night lusting after L glass, maybe they'll bring it back........just a theory.

One rumor I heard was that some of the lens elements were made out of materials that were not environmentally friendly. The other rumor I've heard is that Canon may be redesigning it.

If you've ever worked in a development environment that delivered products to the end user, you know the answer to this question. It's that the product didn't sell. That's it. Period.
You can make the most fabulously technical and perfect product on the planet -- even at the right price point -- but if nobody buys it, yer screwed.
Blame the marketing guys. I've been working on end user products for over ten years and some have been hits and some have been misses, and it's always the marketing guy's fault :D ;)

Hey,you can do that with any other f1.8 lens such as the nifty fifty....it's just that they'll wonder why you are standing right in front of them, pointing a camera up their nose

That nikkon lens will be better!.Yeah,it does lose 1/3rd stop of light but it has VR!! What a lens.Surely canon will bring out something similar..?Wether the 200/1.8 with IS or something close to it?
The nikon is more than a rumour,it's being delivered very soon. The first examples are apearing now.
By the way-Nikon has made a 200/2 for a great many years.I looked it up the other day,was abit surprised myself

I do not think that an IS/VR version will be as clear and sharp at f/1.8 as the original Canon lens..
I suppose this is just my own prejudice.. but that is my humble opinion.

Probably not, but I wonder if the difference will be noticable. And I wonder if it would be enough to offset the benefits of IS.
Picture yourself shooting a night-time outdoor gig, needing to use 1/125 sec or even slower at times due to the low lighting. No tripod or monopod. Using f/1.8 to isolate the favorite performer, with the background gently blurred into a creamy composite of the bright outfits of the supporting performers, while the main character is tack-sharp....
I better be quiet - I certainly don't have $3800 laying around anywhere and I could be talking myself into something I can't afford, even without the IS. :)
