Mr. Don Ellis pointed out the other day there is a good sharpening plug-in for Photoshop 5 & 6 called "Ultrasharpen". I have been using Pekka's LinearSharpen and Fred's EdgeSharpen all along. Now I want to know how they comapred. So I run a little un-scientific tests on both sharpening software and your eyes would be the judge.

This is the original, converted from Pekka's profile of "400-800 Sharpen" setting

And this is with Fred's EdgeSharpen PRO of Stronger setting apply to the one above

Finally, this is with Ultrasharpen demo apply to the one above

Both produce no artificats. You should notice that they are very close to each other in terms of sharpening result. However, Fred's action makes the image a little too bright on my uncalibrated monitor.

Your comments are welcomed.

Griffin,

They both look over-sharpened to me. Did you run ES and US on the convert only output from LS342 or from an option that included sharpening already?

I think it would be a better test, if you included a 100 ISO image that did not have noise.

Griffin,

I think there have been no replies because it is very hard to see any difference between the different versions. If you really want to pursue this comparison, I would suggest choosing a balanced image with lots of detail and then taking, say, a 500 x 500 crop, so you can post full-size results.

I guess it is okay to me Roger, cause may be both are very close to each other. I will keep searching for some good shots anyway.

Actually, the original looks pretty good.
