Just opened http://www.photography-on-the.net/gallery/list.php?exhibition=12

Photos from TUSKA 2004 Heavy Metal Festival last weekend: Nightwish, Dio, Sonata Arctica, Dark Funeral, In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Turisas, Soilwork, Sinergy, Death Angel, Suburban tribe, Fear Factory, Dismember, Charon.

All shot with Mark II. Worked really fine - especially with 70-200 it is really a wonderful tool for catching action in low/mixed light. 85/1.2 did not keep up with moshing (knew that but tried anyway), 17-40 was really useful and extra good and sharp in strong light (good flare handling).

All comments are welcome. More photos (ordinary stuff) coming soon.

PS: If you visit Heavy Metal forums/chats please share the link.

Those are some great images, Pekka!

I will admit that although I enjoy a bit of heavy metal, I'm just not familiar at all with the who's who in music any more.

I'm more of the Led Zeppelin generation ("Zepelin, man"). Nice images - it looks like the musicians are really tapping into their emotions and feelings as they perform. And you've captured it in many of the shots.

I know nothing about metal (unless we're talking steel and aluminum  ) but I'm definitely a fan of great photos. Incredible captures! I'm a member of another board and many of the members there are huge metal fans. Would you mind if I shared this gallery with them? I don't know what your bandwidth limits are and such, so I wouldn't want to post it unless you OKed it. :)

Thanks! That's the point of putting the gallery up: so that people will see it. Share the link to all you can, if server breaks I'll fix it :)

Pekka are you a "Closet Metal Head"? I thought you were a member of the symphony. Many great shots. I looked at them all. I liked the shirt on one of the band members:

F**k You You F**kin F**k

Kind of says it all.........in Heavy Metal-speak.
Cheers,
Rob

It seems that we were enjoying the same festival.

I used to listen Black Sabbath when I was young but I have not actively bought any heavy CD's since then (heard a lot in car radio). I've always liked the visual side of heavy so I was happy to shoot this event.

Many symphonies are close to heavy metal - and there is no restrictions in what one can do or like.

Nice! Next time say hello :)
At the Nightwish concert the front was really packed with photographers - the action was quite frantic to catch from for such a limited space, especially when the stage monitors were covering most of the views.

Awww man! Pekka, you da man! When I saw those Ronnie James Dio shots I got goose bumps. He's one singer that can belt it out. These shots are absolutely amazing. You piss me off! I wish I was there.

Amazing shots!

Yep.. Dio is the man.... On the Silver Mountain!!!!! 8)

When there’s lightning - you know it always brings me down
Cause it’s free and I see that it’s me
Who’s lost and never found
I cry out for magic - I feel it dancing in the light
But it was cold - I lost my hold
To the shadows of the night

Just thought that this thread needed a rebirth. There are some incredible images in this series, and it was only by accident that I stumbled upon them. Maybe everyone else has already seen them but otherwise looking through these is a must!

I am sure this is what we all aspire to.

I look at these EVERY time I log into POTN (cos I come from the home page) and I'm amazed EVERY time!

HOWEVER - why are there no NEW galleries?? Surely 2 years ago is a looooooong time??

I like to look through these from time to time, partly because they're great shots, partly because I was there :) My first (& so far only, sigh....) trip to Finland & I went to Tuska 2004 :)
