Making an icon greyed out

I am trying to make this: http://images1.fotopic.net/?iid=y3m8v0&outx=600&noresize=1&nostamp=1 greyed out (not able to use). Is there a standered on how to do it or do you guess?

ETA: It is suppost to be 16 pixels X 16 pixels.

Where and/or how are you going to use the icon and why does it need to be greyed out?

It will be used in a program and it will be used to show that the button is unusable.

A little more info please. What do you mean by greyed out?

I normally desaturate it in PS and lighten it up a bit, so the icon will be light-grey.
