Hello
i have had my canon A95 for five years.
now whenever i take photos, the camera displays a purple distorted image.
It costs $100 for a camera checkup and then the guy is going to set the addidtional price (which could be anything).
How worthy is this?
Thanks

I would put the $100 towards an updated camera. The A95 has served you well.

Yeah I'd buy new as well. Prices are more than reasonable now depending on what you're looking for in a new camera.

Is this one which is covered under the bad LCD display warranty referenced in the sticky above? If so, maybe a free repair? A friend just had an A75 fixed, several years after purchase.

There's no need to spend anything. The symptoms are that of CCD failure, which is a known problem on certain older cameras including the A95, due to a manufacturing defect. See here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=238911) for details - if you contact Canon, they should sort you out.

I agree with you, but if the problem is around the CCD chip than it will be expensive. So I recommend to buy another newer version!

DavidW pointed out that the problem described is a known issue on some Canon cameras and, if it happens, Canon repair/replace the camera for free, even if it is out of warranty. That is a good customer service!

As Rafael said, if this is CCD failure on an A95, Canon should repair the camera for free. There was a manufacturing issue with the CCDs used in these cameras, which can lead to premature CCD failure.
appleseed_1 has nothing to lose by following the link I previously posted, which will bring up the Canon USA service bulletin (though this issue has been recognised by Canon around the world). It was a problem that affected several brands of camera, including Canon - see here (http://www.imaging-resource.com/badccds.html) for more details.
Obviously, if Canon refuse warranty service, then I would agree - it's not worth paying out for an expensive repair on an old camera.
