Wow, great close up Gary....his upper beak looks almost fractured, at least more damaged than you usually see.

Thanks! I'm relatively new to bird photography so the only way to get better is to ask (sometimes silly questions) and get out there and shoot.

Hey Dave There are no silly Questions if you don't know the answer.
I'm not a fan of Flash for wildlife, It may porvide a small amount of additional Detail but IMO it just scares them off, and you may lose a better pose.
