focus too soft!

Hello all ive been doing some soccer shooting and for some reason the focus ALWAYS seems to be soft...in 100% of my photos. how can i avoid this?

Look like backfocus to me. You need to calibrate body if you get results like this with all lenses.

Send your camera and all your Canon lenses to Canon for calibration.

Before you send your camera off: does this happen with all of your pictures, or just all of your soccer pictures? It could be as easy as missing the right place to focus on moving targets.

well that camara i no longer own. i exchanged it for a 40d. isnt there some form of test you can do the check the calibration? i saw it in a post w/ someone asking if his camara is front focusing. it had a center point to focus on with line up and down the sides to check the focus

Do an actual focus test.

Set a yardstick up on edge on a table. Have it be at a 45 angle to your line of fire. Focus on the 18" mark. Try various f/stops. This will show you if you are actually back focusing or not.

when you say various f stops , is it not best to open it up as much as possible and thus cutting to the chase ?

Not if the lens is fine at f/2.8 but soft at f/11.

The "wide open" will only show the backfocus [a good thing to know!], but going through the stops will demonstrate other problem areas for the lens/camera combo. Ideally, multiple f/stops at more than one distance would be the best.
