So, let's say you just won a decent size football bet and you are coveting both a decent tripod and a flash. You don't have either, and eventually need and will buy both items, but which would you buy first?
I can't decide.

I can't decide. The best answer to that would depend on the type of photography you intend to do with one or the other.
If your main work is with natural light - indoors or out - then a tripod would be the first choice.
If you intend to shoot people indoors (at parties, weddings, etc.), then a good flash rig (with a flash bracket) would be the first choice.

Yep, that's the logical way to figure it. I think the answer will be a tripod.

"Decent football bet" eh?
What about a good monopod plus a 430/550/580ex as an option?
That would give you more fun factor than a flash or tripod alone. But like Skip said, it will depend on what kind of photography you're in to.

Hm, who'd you bet on? New England cheating? har har har
Pending the bet, get a tripod or monopod of amvona for a really good price and buy a used flash like the 430 for $210 in the sell area. I think it's a 430. Maybe a 420.

That would be a gimme! No, I bet on all NFL games for the week, winner of the most games and then the total combined score of the Monday night football game. I won $200 today after picking 13 games right and coming within 2 points of last nights score!
I already have a really nice monopod, and a very cool but barely useful Manfrotto mini tabletop tripod. I think my mind is made up on a flash though, since I have a family reunion coming up and it seems my shots of people are often blurred. I'll probably only decide when I get to the store!

I would go with the tripod.

Personally I'd go for a tripod before a flash (though I maninly use long lenses), a good solid tripod can make a shot possible. I use my tripod(s) on a daily basis, but the flash only comes out on odd occassions. i guess if you do a lot of portrait/indoor work then a flash would probably be more use.
