My SIL is extremely jealous of my new 300d. :)
She can't afford one, and wanted to know if there is something "a step below" the drebel, non-SLR, and < $500.
thanks for your help.

Tell her to find a G5.

I didn't know what SIL meant, so I went to acronym finder and came up with the following:
Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion
-and-
Sister-In-Law
I'm guessing the latter.
In which case the G5 is a good choice.
If it's the former, I have no clue.

What about PRO1?

What about PRO1?
It's a great camera, but decidedly not less than $500.00
On the other hand, I haven't seen the sister-in-law, so who's to say?

What about PRO1?
I though PRO 1 cost about $999.00 :?

Could also be Son-in-law :)

I talked the mother of one of my students into buying the G5 and she has let me play with it several times in the past couple months...I have to say that I was VERY impressed with it. If were going to buy a non-SLR digital, it would probably be the G5..

Agree with everybody suggesting to get the G5.
I use my G5 at times when i can´t or don´t want to take my 10D with me. That camera is a real keeper. Would´nt give it away for a lot of money. :) uhhh... maybe i would for a 17-40L lens
Here´s a example i shot with my G5: Barrels

Another vote for the G5.
I've just bought one to supplement my 10D and D30 - yep, I do still use that as well ;-)
The learning curve for one who's not used a P&S camera for donkeys years has been a little longer than I had anticipated, with a few surprises, but I'm very impressed with the G5's abilities and quality.
