Sharpening and portrait effects in PS

If I am using a 'portrait effect' (i.e. a soft glow or diffuse action) on an image, do I sharpen before or after applying the effect? Or not at all?

for me I would sharpen first. I suppose you can try it each way and see what looks best to you.

yeah sharpen then duplicate and screen then change opacity usually
