View Full Version : What's the Toughest Sport to Shoot?

Yeah, yeah, I could make a poll, but I've never done it and don't know how. Don't like 'em anyway.

I shoot baseball, which is not that difficult, of course not claiming to be great at it.

I shoot football, again same as above.

I shoot swimming, same.

I shoot wrestling, which besides varying lighting, again I'm fairly decent at.

So, yesterday I shoot soccer. My daughter made the high school team.

IT IS IMPOSSIBLE.

Agree or disagree?

Women's soccer is difficult because they can't stay seperated. You always get a few extra players in the frame.

But, try flag football with young kids. Now that is impossible. You have no idea where they are going because they have no idea where they are going.

I've shot cars, superbikes, trapeze, baseball, soccer, football. indoor ball hockey, outdoor ball hockey, basketball etc.

By far the hardest for me has been Hobia Cat racing. Salt water, swaying boat, IS, sea sickness, not much to hold on to, swimming out to the boat with my gear bag....

Yeah, boat racing for sure.

Amen to that! Poor confuzzled little tykes. Ours starts next week. :D

I'd think Hockey would be insane to shoot. Heck, it's hard enough for me to keep up who is where just watching!

I've never done it, but I see the paintball photographers in here every now and then; busted lenses, bruised bodies... Just don't look easy.

football is pretty is easy oh sorry i mean soccor it just takes practice

i would say boat racing or drag racing (top fuel and funny car's) not easy to get a shot but bloody hard to get consistat impressive shots

That's actually funny!

I love water polo. You sit by a pool and take shots. Actually pool volleyball was fun and made me some good cash.

BillsBayou

Wouldn't you want one or two of those "above and below the water line" action shots? That doesn't sound too easy.

cosworth

Olympic/Competitive water polo sees a lot of action underwater. Regular Joe water polo is in shallow water and easy as pie.

I'd say skydiving can be kind of tough...

Submarine racing.

This one is easy! I just shoot the sonar screen.

If I'm feeling creative I set it for a long exposure...

Now I would think competitive eating would be hard to shoot. How many ways can you shoot a guy eating a hot dog?

The porn industry has come up with quite a few.

You really shouldn't admit to that when there are Canadians present.

I would guess that some branches of Extreme Ironing would be hard to shoot. Yes, Extreme Ironing... look it up.

I'm so glad Fox ditched the red hot puck.

That being said more people watch bowling than hockey in the USA. Sad.

Yes, hockey can be tough with white balance, shooting through plexiglass (perspex) and horrible lighting. Oh and did I mention it's cold in most rinks?

Didn't Fox actually ditch hockey and not just the blazing puck? I think hockey is relegated to the Outdoor Life Network in the US now. Go figure

NBC carries it in SDTV and HD. It's one of those sports like Football those REALLY works in high def.

Kids soccer has to rank right up there, too. Everyone on the field wants to be within three feet of the ball -- and nobody knows where they're going, or where the ball's going, next.

And I just signed on to coach a kindergarten team again, glutton for punishment that I am. . . ;)

beat me to it Doc, so I second this motion. The lighting is usually crap and that ball can move FAST.

Beer swilling and @ss grabbing.

Especially when a guy makes a grab for another guy.

Now that really messes you up emotionally and psychologically. ;)

I've shot bowling from halfway down the lanes so that the bowlers were facing me. The problems are low light, no flash, with brighter lights behind the bowlers.

http://coloradosprings.smugmug.com/photos/117100192-M.jpg

I haven't shot either sport but I can imagine racketball being tough with a lack of places to shoot from and boxing with the speed of a punch vs my reaction time.

Selecting from the sports I have shot, I would have to say high school baseball is the toughest depending on the field and having to shoot through a chain-link fence.

I've found gymnastics really hard to shoot. The lighting is poor and the girls flip around so fast! And then other people are always in the way. Still sounds easier than soccer tho. Luckily my kid doesn't like to run so we've avoided soccer trauma so far, heheh.

For Me it was wrestling - the good shots always seemed to happen with the wrestler's butts looking at the camera, that coupled with the bad lighting.
Baseball - pitching duals with no action, usually getting bored then someone would get a hit and I'd not be ready for it.
Volleyball - lopsided games that were over before I could find a decent shooting angle.
Swimming - just way hard to find a good shooting angle where you were not in the way of some scorer or other official. There was a school were the diving and swimming pool ends where separated by a temporary bridge, I always wanted to get in the water with a Nikonos and shoot pool level or even under water for the flip.
Basketball - not hard unless it was a small high school gym where the cheerleaders and I needed to be on the same nonreferee corner.
Gymnastics - Tough lighting, no strobe and try not have the motordrive go off at a quite moment. There was also the problem of not, in the editors words, "not shooting one of the girls in a compromising position".
