I have been reading this forum a lot about the Digital Rebel and it's inability to make a desent exposure with flash and I would like to know if setting the FEC on the 550EX gives the same results as using the FECset program? I did a couple weddings and had to use a lot of curves in PhotoShop to get a good picture.

The 300D hack will give you FEC. That was one of my favorite things about the hack, when I had my 300D.

I'm really trying to avoid hacking due to the warranty. The "hack" isn't the same as using FECset is it?

The hack allows full-time control of FEC, which FECset doesnt provide.
In addition, the hack allows you to choose AF modes, increase the number of pictures you can get on a flash card by reducing the embedded jpg size, mirror lock-up, and many more features.

As far as warranty is concerned, if you have a problem, just reflash to the official firmware, and then send it in.
I've read atleast one story where a guy sent his camera in for warrranty repair WITH the hacked firmware, and Canon didnt even notice.

The 550EX also gives other abilities than just FEC, like manual output, wireless slaving, etc. But it is pretty big and expen$ive, which is why I kept my 420EX, and just applied the "310D firmware"

....not trying to push you into anything you don't want to do, but I agree with drisley.... The hack was never a warranty-worry for me, when I had the 300D... I loved the hack! If I had a problem, I would just re-install the canon firmware...its super-easy.... and like drisley said, I've heard several stories of people sending in their hacked camera for service and Canon not giving them ANY trouble...

The hack does give you full FEC.

Lots of great information here:

The link to the firmware is also there.
I still say the word "hack" really scares alot of people.
BTW, I was like you Tshoe, in that I put off installing that firmware for a LONG time. But when I finally did last month, I was so pleasantly surprised, I'd wished I'd done it much sooner.

Thank you drisley for the link and to everyone who took time to reply to me. I'm 61 and it's hard to learn new tricks.
