Trying something a little different here. I was on my way home from taking a few nature shots and I saw this rusty old metal barrel and spray painted sign in front of an abandoned building. I pulled up to the building and shot it from the car window. I did some "post" on the shot (mostly de-saturation, gross sharpening to make it more grungy looking and some contrast adjustment). I was going for sort of a "ghetto industrial" (?) look.

I think this has its place, but with such a tight crop, I am just having a hard time with it... I just cant seem to place words on what I want to say, but it's not really working for me yet.

SUSAE, This is the original setting which is what originally caught my eye. Perhaps I shouldn't mess with it - or perhaps it would work both ways. I do like the combination of flaked off, rusty green patina on the outside of the barrel and the bright red rust on the inside. The building housed an old automotive business (Hunt Bros.) in Manchester, TN back when I was a young child. In looking at the sign, I now see that it says "Now Open ? a. - 6 p. M-F". Nice sign, eh?

I agree, it needs to be a smaller part of a bigger whole. Alone it really doesnt say much other than "I'm a rusty drum"......

Experimental crop. Cropped much closer on the sides (the stuff on the right side was distracting with a less agressive crop). Still left some headroom above to keep from crowding the subject too much.

EDIT: After posting it seems it should be cropped slightly closer on the right of the barrel to eliminate the sliver of bay door framing.?.

I thought i would give it a try. Hope you don't mind.
I got rid of the plants on the left and right to get rid of the distraction.
This way you do not need a tighter crop.
