Thanks all :)

Shot from Rialto Towers. In fact if you look at the 3rd pic, the tower to the right of the frame, the one with the markings that look like a graduated measuring cylinder, that's Eureka Tower.

Grin: no chopper this time... it was a lot cheaper ;) besides, it wouldn't be possible to pull it off at night.. the chopper just shakes too much. The two towers I mentioned have observation decks which you can visit for a small fee. Comfortable, except shooting through inch-thick glass with EXTREMELY severe reflections from the interior lights is very challenging. There are times when you use hoods AND hands and I wish I'd brought some rolled up paper!

(all shots 70-200 f/4 IS, stabilizer OFF, but it was parked on a sturdy tripod for long exposures)

I was just thinking how it would be possible to get such sharp shots from a chopper at night. How high was the building you were on? Nice shots btw.

Great shots, I have some similar night shots from when I was up there ealier in the year. I had major problems dealing with the reflection from the thick glass.

What lens did you use to zoom in on the ferris wheel?

About 55 floors up, I think. At least that's what one of the signs said :)

The ferris wheel is the long end of my 70-200 (on 5D) but with a good bit of cropping in PS later. If you're using a 1.6x crop camera you should be able to get significantly closer and/or crop less in software later.

Hoods are a definite must. If I didn't have a hood I'd use anything I could get, including rolled up paper. In fact I should have brought some rolled paper to 'extend' my hood a little last night, just that I didn't think of it.

Another trick we use is to take off our own jackets and put it over the camera. It looks wierd as all heck to others who think these photogs are real nuts, but the results are awesome. For wide angle lenses this is really the only way to go as you can't hood a WA effectively at all.

Thats what I ended up doing. That and the fact I was down on my hands and knees made me look even more dorkie.

Great shots. Crystal clear, sharp and interesting. Whats that wierd yellow thing left of the ferris wheel though?

Thanks guys :)

Not sure what the yellow streak is, though. It sorta looks like a road from this perspective but doesn't seem likely that they'd light an entire road in yellow.
