Hi guys I am new to digital photography and I have been trying to take aphoto of a harbour bay at night but all I get is the lights from the boats and no other detail, can any of you give me pointers on how to set up my camera for this. By the way I have a Powershot A40.
Thanks
Just.

Does the A40 have a Tv mode? Then set it at about 1 sec maybe more depending on the time. I try to shoot at twilight and I get pretty good pictures. Another tip is to put it on timer and then it will not move.

You will have to use either the "Program" mode or the "Manual" mode to be able to select the aperture and shutter speed that you will need to do this, probably starting with a shutter speed between 1 and 3 seconds to start with.
You should also have a tripod or other means of supporting your camera so that it will not shake while you are taking the picture and produce a blur on the photograph. Use the timer function set at 2 seconds delay so that your camera is steady after depressing the shutter button before the shutter actually opens.
You will have to use your manual to see how to use these two modes and probably take numerous test picture until you get one that you like.
Don't dispair it is possible with the A40, check out this link:
