Hello Mark,

Thanks for review.

I hope you are able to review an Ixus 960IS (SD950) soon and see if this achieves as good a conclusion.

Regards

Not as good a review as I would haved hoped, but as the list price is £369 and I have only paid £251 for the Ixus I will assume the rating raises slightly.

It hopefully arrives tomorrow:D

Hello simwells,

Are you sure this wasn't the Ixus 950IS as the 960IS has only just been released?

Thanks Mark,

I assume that price would alter your scores ever so slightly?

Well after my problems with a IXUS960IS please see thread:

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=386565 (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=386565)

and after trying an IXUS860IS I have decided and bought the IXUS860IS.

My reasons are the 28mm wide angle. Once you have experienced 28mm on a compact there is no going back.

The 3 inch LCD is superb. I have tried it in the brightest of conditions and it is still viewable to frame a shot.

I prefer the buttons as they are of a more user friendly size.

Also the speed and responsiveness is fast.

As for as ISO performance as long as it is kept below 400 all is okay. For those conditions that demand higher I will have my DSLR with me.

So all in all very pleased and must agree with Mark that at the moment the IXUS860IS is one of the best IXUS cameras to date.

I purchased the IXUS 860IS, serial number 5278202468 on the 31 March 2008 to use on an overseas holiday. A bad choice!! The lens would not retract and upon my return (I was away for 4 months) I returned the camera to David Jones store in Karrinyup western Australia, for repairs. (8 Sept 08) The camera was away being repaired for several weeks.

This year I again went to Europe for 4 months. (May to 29th August) Imagine my dismay when the same problem occured again! I could not get the camera repaired in Germany and I didn't want to have my holiday memories "stuffed" once again, so I purchased another camera. (also a Cannon (IXUS870IS)).

David Jones advise that they will send the camera away once again to be repaired. Instead, I would like my money back as this is obviously a dud! Aside from that, I have purchased a replacement. The shop assistant suggested I should sell it on EBAY!! I wouldn't get a fraction of what I paid for it and I wouldn't knowingly sell a dud to some poor devil who thinks he's getting a good camera!
I look to you for a solution. I certainly won't take this camera away again..I can't trust it and I have a replacement anyway.
Is this a common problem and what are the usual outcomes?

Oh dear you are unlucky.
Touch wood I use 2 together for my 3d work and they work great.
Do hope you are sorted I am sure Canon would like to hear from you.

Obviously Canon don't give a damn about customer relations!! Their reply follows.

Dear Merryl,

Thank you for your email concerning the ongoing problems you have experienced with the IXUS 860IS camera, it is always disappointing to read when a product fails, especially after being repaired. Canon Australia did not repair your camera in September 2008 as David Jones elected to send it to one of our authorised repair agents Hartland Camera Repairs in Perth who undertook the work.

Unfortunately as the camera is now outside both the manufacturer's and repair warranty by several months, if the unit is sent to us it would have to be assessed and a quote to repair issued detailing what work and cost is required to return it to specifications.

As to your request for a refund I must advise that our product warranty is for the repair/replacement of defective parts and is not a product replacement/refund warranty, therefore we would not be in a position to refund you the purchase price of the camera.

If you would like Canon to assess the camera, we would be more than happy to waive the normal quote fee. Shipping details are shown below.
