I just picked up a 4MDH from Circuit City but it is too small for my needs. I am looking for a smaller bag for light travel: XT w/grip (although this may change to a 40D w/grip at some point), Sigma 17-70 attached, and a 430EX flash, and maybe a few small accessories. The 4MDH does not hold a gripped camera very well.

The Domke F-3x looks plenty big enough but even seems too big. The amount of gear I have seen people put in that bag is amazing. I know you don't have to fill it up but if I could get a smaller bag and still fit the gear listed I would be happier.

I would love to see some side by side shots of an F-3x and 5/6 MDH. Also if anyone has a Domke F-3x and F-2 they could take pics of side by side that would help me see the difference in size as I have an F-2.

smaller? :p Here's my 5MDH which should be plenty big enough. I guess the grip is what kills it on the 4MDH. I Should show Crumpler what can really fit in these bags, cause on their site, this shouldn't.

Oh right, it's my 70-200 F2.8 with the 430EX in front of it. My 20D with handstrap goes into the empty space. And remember that handstraps have those attachments at the bottom. Fit real snug but not so much it's hard to pull anything out. So, Xt or 40D with grip and flash would def fit. I have an 18-50 F2.8 attached. which is the same size as the 17-70. I think there's a 5MDH for sale for $55, red in the market area. Go quick! http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=383412&highlight=crumpler

The you can add your view to my thread. Link in sig. :D

Thanks Jon. The F-3x still looks a little bigger than I want, but it looks like a great bag.

I have, as well as other review sites. I wish I could see them in person but nowhere around here carries anything I like. I found a cheap Case Logic bag that was perfect in size, number of compartments, had adequate padding and a good price, but it just has that black nylon "camera bag" look to it.

This is another bag I thought might do the trick. I can actually go look at the bad too since stores in the area stock it. There was a Tamrac bag as well that I saw in the B&H catalog.

Nova 2 might work. It's actually surprisingly quite smaller than the 3. Remember Lowepro has the AW cover.

I found them in stock at Amazon so I just bought one. $69.99 plus shipping which is less than what I would have paid for the 5MDH. I will post a reivew when I get it.

Neato! Nova 3 is still cheaper! :p

Domke and Crumpler are nice bags, but in Fla, Aw covers rain supreme, no pun intended.

Cheaper is not always better. ;) Besides I don't go out in inclement weather to go shooting much, if any. :)

Like I said, I'm in Fla. You don't have to go out into inclement weather. You could go out in Sunny weather! :D

NC is nice. Get a review of the domke, I love messengers.

Ok this may be out of the topic but I will be posting a review on the Speed Racer. it's a bigger bag but it should be an interesting review. Including a review of the Chimp Cage, and just received the ThinkTank Digital holster 50. So all those will go up soon enough.

To the Domke f-3x owners, is it possible to store a canon 24-70 w/hood reversed in one of the built in pockets? I tried to get an idea by putting my fist into a pocket and it was tight. I am almost certain the 70-200/2.8 IS wont fit with reversed hood, but wondered if the 24-70 could? I am thinking maybe not?

I want a day bag and its either the f-3x or the f-4af, i am leaning towards the f-4af soley based on the inserts can be changed between the f-1x I already have. Any input would be much appreciated.

I can tell you that the 70-200 f/4 IS fits with hood reversed. I can't say it's a tight fit but it's "about right" fit.

I wonder if the 24-70 w/ hood reversed is the same circumfrence?? I am starting to think not. (2.8vs4.0)

You mean the inside compartments or the outside pockets? I put my 5D/24-70 and a 70-00 2.8 IS in the main compartment with the supplied divider between them; I can also put a smaller lens or my A620 in one of the inner compartments. For that matter, I could probably fit a 720-220 2-compartment insert in there if I really wanted to. Never tried to put a lens in the outside compartments.

The hood for the 70-200 f/4 lenses are quite large. I am not familiar with the hood on the 24-70 though. The hood for the 70-200 is the ET-74 which Amazon says is 4.3 x 4 x 3.3 inches. 4.3 is the diameter of the end of th ehood, 4 is the daimeter of the mount of the hood and 3.3 is the length.

This is why it's hard to buy bags based on words and no pictures.

I don't know the size of the hood on the 24-70. (Hopefully soon though, getting this on order) but I'll try to take a picture of the 70-200 f/4 IS hood reversed with the F-3x inner pocket.

The 24-70 hood's about the same diameter as the hood on a 70-200 2.8.

SO the built in pockets (inside the bag, there's 2 of them) of the f-3x are what I am questioning? they dont seem like they can get bigger than about 4 inches in circumfrence?

They can fit believe me, I always do it. I'll take a picture tonight as I have stated.
