For those of you doing a slideshow at the reception (DJ and Banbert I know do it), how do you import JUST the small JPG when shooting RAW + JPG onto your laptop?

We copy them all across... we bought an express 34 card for the mac to make this quicker and it really did speed things up even though the cards should be the limiting speed factor. Last wedding we did with the old usb reader as theres a problem with my mac books card port that we need to get fixed, hopefully we can do this at the weekend because it really does make quite a difference.

Each card has a number and we copy the whole contents of each card to a folder on the mac book named the same number on the card. We then run an Automator action that seperates the JPG's and RAWs and renames all the files with the date and time of creation + original file name and dumps them 2 directories, one for RAW one for JPGs,. Because our cameras were time synced before we started shooting this puts the files from 5 bodies in chronological order.

We open the JPG's directory in bridge and whizz through them at about qtr full screen size and pick our fave 100-150 out by marking them with 5 *

We open the 5*'s in showit effects and give them some kapow and it saves the edited ones to a subdirectory in the clients directory called slideshow.

We import the slideshow directory into iPhoto and use that for displaying the slideshow

We also pick out 10 pics and print them for the honeymoon album.

Its quite a lot to do but I am pretty quick at it now and very systematic plus the tools we have bought all help us shave time from what it used to take us so now we find we have usually finished what were doing when the wedding breakfast has finished...... unless we get carried away picking photos so it takes an age to put em through showit effects ... we did 193 at one wedding this year... which was silly.

Side benefit of doing all this is that we leave each shoot with 2 copies of the images which is a very nice feeling.

Definitely worth the effort though I reckon.

Weve done well for referals this year and I am sure at least part of its due to the slideshow on the day.

I use Macbook Pro, what I do is I open the CF card folder and sort out by file extension. ".jpg" and then drag and drop them into a new folder on the destop. then import them to LR for some quick edit. I always mention to theB&G if I have 2 hrs before receptions I will put up a slideshow for them. Very stressful but well worth it! I got some referrals because of the show and they like the idea alot :)
