Hi all, I have been shooting mostly daytime with a 30D and Canon 70-200 f2.8l in AV mode, al servo, wide open, center focus,100-200 ISO. I am going to be shooting the kids association homecoming football games which will be under the lights and the parents will also be coming out to mid field before the game with their kids. I wanted to know if there were any better modes or settings (other than adjusting the ISO) that would be best for taking the portraits and shooting in general. I will have a monopod and was thinking about renting a flash for the portraits. Thanks for any info.

I assume it will be pretty dark if it's night football. Depending on the stadium of course. Using a flash is a good idea, it takes some practice to get that dialed in though so be prepared to have lots of throw away images at first. Many high school football stadiums are ISO1600 - f/2.8 - 1/500 or much darker so take that into consideration.

If you're going to shoot the action:
AV is a good place to start if you're not comfortable with full manual control. Depending upon the lights at the field you're going to have to have to crank up the ISO (which you already knew). Another way to cheat a bit for shutter speed is to under expose just a bit, you can brighten some in PS. I usually go 1-2/3's of a stop.
At the top of the page is a sticky with sports shooting advice, in there is a link with some excellent information on shooting football with a flash.
