The Canon hood is ridiculously expensive.
You can get cheap knock-offs on eBay. For instance:

I got the knockoff - the one for the 17-55 is a bit thin, but it works fine.

I bought the 24/105L first, and discovered that the hood for it fit the 17/55.
I wouldn't recommend this as it makes a very expensive hood.
Well made though.

I got the Canon hood, like to match the brands. Figured with the cost of the lens I should get the Canon hood.
Guess I just drank the Canon coolaide a bit much.

The BEST hood is the Canon OEM EW-83J. I first bought the ebay knockoff, after a few monthes of use, I have a few problems:
1) it is make of a much softer plastic, so it does NOT click into place after a while, the hood constantly twisting, so I have to make sure it is at the right position every time I shoot.
2) when new, the hood, when click in place is NOT perfectly fit into place. It is over turning by a few degree. It is noticeable visionally, but does NOT affect the picture. But after using it for a while, die to it softer material, the over turning angle increase. It makes it very difficult to seat in the right place.
Finally, I bought the OEM Canon, haven't had problem since. It can be found for about $30 on ebay.

I use the Canon lens hoods. They are a little pricey but what the heck - you paid hundreds of dolars for the lens so why not $20-$30 more for the hood, eh?
