It needs to be professionally calibrated to match your camera.
Send my your 580EX II, your 1D Mk III, and your 85L, and I will calibrate everything for you and return it in 4-6 weeks.

Just a little service I do for my POTN friends.

Don't listen to those jokers, Mark. They're just jealous 'cuz you got a nice sexy 580EX II.

Now, to make the best of the beauty, what you need to do is insert 4 AA batteries, rechargeables are preferable and make sure they're charged.

Slide the flash onto the camera hotshoe from the rear (that's your side of the camera versus the subject's side...you may already have noticed, the flash doesn't go in from the subject's side).

Turn on the camera and then turn on the flash. Push the Mode button on the flash until the LCD shows "ETTL".

Set the camera to the green box mode. Oh, wait. Your camera doesn't have a green box mode (for how much you paid for that thing, you should complain to someone about that). So set it to P mode. You could set it to Av or M mode but I'm feeling too lazy to write up the how-to for those modes.

Go find a willing (or unwilling) subject and start snapping away. If you hear the flash start to whine, don't worry about it. It's not an incoming. It's just your brain making like the capacitor in the flash is recharging. And if you don't hear any whining sound, don't worry about that either. The flash isn't broken. The 580EX II doesn't make any whining sound 'cuz it's so state-of-the-art.

Have fun!

Actually Mark, the normal prodecure every time someone buys a new flash unit is to start a new thread with the title, "Which diffuser should I get for my new flash unit?" Apparently most folks who buy flash units nowadays think the advice given in the previous 3,496 threads on that topic won't apply to them.

So let me save you some time. You need a Delux Bowl-a-tron Duo Diffuser (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=3929628&postcount=49).

Hahahahaa, I actually have the 580ex for awhile and I just literally started looking for a diffuser today! After using the Search feature here for the keyword "DIFFUSER" and it brought up a lot and AFTER going through each one of them (reading the reviews, etc.) One thing that was consistent was this statement....

As Curtis stated, "Lumiquest Pro System and/or Softbox (THE BIG ONE)"

Of course, now I know what I need to get, however, I couldn't pass up asking a "diffuser question" so I made sure I approached it/asked it, differently.

Here is my post  (My Diffuser question (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=384776))

Once again, someone with more money than sense. ;)

I know Curtis is and will always be "Master Flasher"...but he only has one thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=352109&page=12) to support that title.....while I on the other hand have posted many perfectly exposed shots.

Therefore, it would be in your best intrest and the intrest of your gear to send it to a trained professional. I shall see what I can do for you. It would be necessary for a complete calibration to send all your gear listed in your signature. I'll send you my information via PM. :)

As Curtis mentioned, I'm also glad to be a part of such a caring community. This is the least I can do for you Mark.

Grace,
I could never compete with you in talent, beauty or charm.
Further, I don't look nearly as good as you with my shirt off, and my underwear isn't nearly as "cute" as yours.
But if you're going to link to my expose' (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=3605700&postcount=178), then the least you could do is offer a link to one of yours as evidence.

Arggg! I'm going to be blind for the rest of my life now! Why did you show me that post of the origins of the Master Flasher!?!?!?

Well, at least I now understand where Curtis' title came from.

I'll never be able to reply to Curtis' posts without the Master Flasher flashing in my mind.

Well, thank you very much, everyone. I always knew I had great friends here.

I actually own one of those Gary Wong thingies. It sits forlornly in the rear of my drawer never to see the light of day. Nope. Not for me.

I prefer that wee little white card that pops out.

I'll be sending the equipment first to Grace who will then send it on to Curtis who will then send it on to ....... ;)

Seal up the bottom of the Fong-ware and fill it wilth some nice warm WonTon soup. In my opinion, that is THE best flash diffuser to use for soup.....well, other than my world renowned, award-winning SoupSphere featured in last month's issue of Photo Crock.
