I was thinking this morning about having to get releases signed for photo's you take ie. a night club. Why does this not apply to celebrities if they are shot in the same place? I don't know anything about that aspect of photography so please bare with me LOL

However... to answer your question in simple terms...

If the images are used in an 'editorial' context, e.g. to illustrate a story in a newspaper or magazine, then there is no need to obtain a model release.

If the images are used 'commercially', e.g. in an advertising campaign, then model releases should be obtained.

There can be more complex issues at stake regarding 'privacy' but the two statements above should act as a good rule of thumb.
