I just bought a lens and paid for it in part with an Amazon gift certificate. Actually, the lens came from Adorama, and I'm guessing you can therefore buy anything that Adorama carries. I'd probably buy a couple extra lens caps or maybe an extra quick release plate for my tripod.

I'd get a book if someone could recommend a good one ^_^ I'm only good at picking out crap that I'll never read.. so I rather have someone else pick it.

As its a gift, something you weren't expecting why not take a chance. Find a photography book on a subject you aren't normally interested in, or know little about. Maybe it will turn out to be really great and you find a new interest or a new technique or two. But if not, oh well nothing really lost.

For books, Understanding Exposure by Bryan F. Peterson, but wait until August, his revised one with plenty of digital information is going to be released.
Also try Hedgecoe's Photographer's Handbook.
If you have some spare cash, get both. I skimmed through the old understanding exposure, and I think almost anyone will back me up in saying its an amazing book, cant wait to get the digital version.
Hedgecoe is a photography book guru. Though the Handbook is old, it is a really good read. Make sure you get the one made in 92............
National Geographic Field Guide is also pretty good.
Cheers.
