Shot these at the fair over the weekend with a new 50mm F1.8 lens. I was stuck without my 420EX flash.
Would the first picture benefit from having the flash? I was less than 20ft from the swinging carts.

No tripod was used. It was done freehand.

how do ya'll do this? any shot i take longer than 1/20 sec, I get tons of blur.

Learn to hold your camera correctly. I do quite a bit of shooting and transfer the rifle skills to the photography area.
I can go as low as 1/10 of a second at 85mm without a lot of blur. Go to google and type in "basic rifle position" or "rifle shooting basics". It's gonna give a lot of good links.

I spend alot of time pistol, rifle and shotgun shooting. Being able to hold a 10lb rifle still is a bit of a task, so when you transition to shooting cameras, it makes for steadier hands. Shooting skills for both hobbies carry over many of the same prinicipals.
For me mounting the camera consistantly, stance and breathing are very important. Check out the link DocFrankenstein sent you.
Here is another picture. The intent was to get the blurr from the gravitron.
